thumb safety pin removal
« on: March 04, 2011, 10:03:15 PM »
Trying to detail strip my 82. At the point where I'm trying to drive out the thumb safety pin from left to right. I actually bent two drift pins and don't seem to be making much progress. Should the hammer be cocked and safety engaged or should everything be at rest. Is there another trick to it? thanks!

you can remove it with everything at rest.   The safty pin can be driven out in either direction.  I think the only pin you have to drive out in one direction is the trigger gaurd latch pin.

Another thing is make sure you remove the slide stop spring from the trigger gaurd latch pin prior to removing that pin or the slide stop or you will sear off the end of the slide stop spring and it will be useless. it will look OK but will be too short to work. Also be careful when removing the pin that holds the sear and sear spring in as the little spring can get lost easy.

good luck with the safety spring. I would oil it good and hope that will lossen up that pin. not sure what would keep it from coming out.

here is links to two good resourses for breking down the 82

The manual safety pin is staked in position. If you look on the underside of the beavertail you'll see a slight indentation where it's been staked. Depending on how hard it was struck determines how tightly it holds the pin.

Are you using a brass punch to drive the pin out? You may have to use a steel pin punch. I'd apply a couple of layers of tape over the pin to protect the safety from marring, mark the tape where the pin is, and drive it out. Reinserting the pin is just as firm as removing it.

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. I did get it to budge a little but the amount of force was much more than I normally use to drive out pins. At least I know I'm doing the right thing and won;t damage the parts

The safety pin does have a detent/ridge in the center of the pin and has to be driven out pretty forcefully.  Once you get the pin off the safety lifts off easier with the hammer back.

OK got it out. As SMSgt suggested, a steel pin driver was needed. Clamping the frame onto a vise was not enough, I had to improvise different points of support around the pin with clearance for the pin then it came out relatively easily.

A while back I posted on this very topic. To get mine out I ended up using a steel punch with a Three (!) pound hammer. Another one went much easier. God Bless, Ron in FL
