So, today I bought one of the Wideners Pre-B CZ-75's. I did this for one reason, I wanted the slide release. In this thread, I am going to compare a Short-Rail(1979) to a Pre-B (1985)
Two pistols in the pictorial comparison:
Short Rail: a 1979 CZ-75 purchased around 7 years ago. Story is a little unknown, when it first came into the gun shop, it was one of two, and both were such abysmal wrecks I didn't even consider it. 6 months later, the gun smith replaced the broken slide stop, stripped the gun, resurfaced it to glass smooth (how I have no idea). I don't remember the cost out the door - couldn't have been more than $500. All I can say is he's one artist of a gunsmith. Original barrel, frame, slide, and most of the innards. It's my main 9mm, and I shoot it in IDPA matchs. It sees around 1000 rounds/year. Maybe more. I've fired everything from lead reloads, to Police +P, to Blazers. It's standard diet is Blazer 115 gr. I won't say it's never jammed, but it hasn't in quite a while. Because I use it, I replaced the hammer with a rounded one, and switched to rubber CZ grips (the waffles are tore up, and the hard plastic ones are too slick for my tastes)
1985 Pre-B: Purchased from Wideners. Based on the wear and impact marks, it's been fired, but the barrel still looks brand new. Looks like the Czech police officer switched to Packmire grips for some reason. I don't care for them, they are fat and heavy. Here are the specifications:
Gun Type Year Empty gun, no mag, with grips supplied Slide+Spring+Bbl+plunger Frame (w/ grips) Frame (w/out grips, but w/ screws) BBL Packmire Grips Hard Plastic Grips (CZ) Rubber Grips (CZ) Empty magazine Loaded magazine (hydrashocks) MT gun w/ CZ rubber w/ MT mag Loaded gun w/ CZ rubber MT gun weight increase to Pre-B Loaded gun w/ CZ rubber

Note that 1985 is about 2% heavier, mostly in the slide. Which isn't much. The barrels are the same weight, which is interesting because the 1985 appears to have a different chamber cut that looks like it adds more weight. It might add more strength too, but not really, as the weaker point above it is still the same thickness, I think it's different just because it's easier to cut. I do note that the 1985 barrel looks like someone came along after the fact and smoothed out the outside edges of the chamber. Reliability fix for a filthy gun not locking up into the slide?
Side by side profiles. Note I had already swiped the 1985 slide release for my Short Rail.
