Need advice on finish
« on: August 27, 2005, 11:42:03 PM »
I can't decide which finish to get.  I've seen pics of both and the glossy blue looks great, but I've also heard it's less durable.  I ordered a glossy blue but now I'm having 2nd thoughts and the order doesn't go thru till Monday so I may be able to change it.  I don't plan to carry the gun right now, it's only going to be for range use and home defense but I may change my mind in the future.  If I can't change it it's no big deal, the glossy blue looks soooo nice, but I just want to be 100% sure before I drop $470.  Any advice?

Hey its all a matter of what you like. I am a polycoat guy but if you like blue then I am sure you will like it. Do not abuse it and it will be fine. Mine is polycoat and it has some marks on the finish on the front of the frame. I would not sweat it.

The glossy blue is a beautiful finish, and its not less durable than other blued finishes -- its just less durable than CZs polycoat or satin nickel (and SN isn't availble in the 97.)

You could do worse -- but you'll spend a little extra time keeping it free of fingerprints, etc.

Whenever your gun's finish wears out just send it out for refinishing. There are so many quality finishes available, that it's kinda moot to worry about it. I have my 97B hard chromed and it looks (to my eyes) a lot better than either the poly or blue.

One thing I have noticed is that on some of CZ's polycoat jobs, the finish is very smooth and uniform while others seem somewhat porous.  Why is this?

How much does something like that cost?

From $100 - $175, depending on the finish, plus shipping, which can be up to $75 more.

Hard chrome is the way to go, if you have that option -- its the most durable finish, and "slicks" up the internals, too.

Nickel is very good, and there are a number of space-age polymers or similar applied finishes (like Metalcol or Roguard) that are very good.

Sanger,
Could you please post pics of your hard-chromed 97?

Edit:  Sorry, I just saw Brasman's link.  Looks as sweet as I expected. But you can post more views if you like. :)

I had my custom Para P14 Limited hard chromed, and the action just gets slicker and slicker the more you cycle and fire it.  The slide feels like it doesn't even need lube. (I still lube it)
