Virgil and the 97B - Pictures
« on: June 10, 2005, 08:43:28 AM »
So I sent my 97B off along with my collection of 1911's for hard chroming at Tripp Research.

Along the way, I noticed that the 97B, while a gorgeous pistol to begin with (I love the rear of the slide) has an unlovely muzzle end. The lines of the slide don't match up to the dust cover. Virgil and I have talked about it and he's come up with a plan of action. He won't touch the reverse plug, or the bushing but everything else is open for grinding/cutting/shaping.

Can't wait to see how it turns out.

Pics when available.

I used to call the CZ 97B the "Bohemian Eagle."  Actually, it doesn't look anything like a Desert Eagle.  OTOH, it doesn't really look like a CZ 75 series pistol at all, apart from the grip frame.
The artist formerly known as FEG...

I can remember when I first saw a picture of the CZ 75 and the CZ 97.  Didn't like the looks of either of them.  My, how that story has changed.  :)

OH MY GOD!!!!  That is sooooo fine!  Would you please share how much just the coating cost?  Does Tripp Research have a web site?  Did you have the small parts (action) done as well?

I really think the lines on Tanfoglio pistols are the most pleasing around.  The hard chrome you had applied, plus the work is just beautiful!  Seriously looks like a work of art.

I've got to get this done to mine now that I just picked one up!

Virgil's hardchrome with barrel price is $175. Everything is hardchromed, except for the sear assembly. He doesn't want the liability of changing the sear/hammer relationship, unless he's doing a trigger job.

So far, the 97B has had the following done:

By me:
Conversion to SA only
CZ competition sights and hammer (Angus)
Feed ramp recut
Mag catch worked for higher mag position
Action job (3.5#)
Desert ironwood grips (Omega)

By Virgil:
Lines cleaned up
Rail on slide forward of the dustcover removed
Barrel recrowned
Hardchromed, brushed flats, satin on the rest

Virgil's website is:
www.trippresearch.com/

Thanks for the reply!

Sorry to machine gun ya with all the questions but the gun looks just perfect to me.  I showed the pic to the wife and she asked me if I was going to have that done to mine.

She didn't even harass me about the cost.

:x

Once again, outstanding looking weapon ya got there!

Thanks

Interesting that he didn't want to plate the sear assembly.  That standard practice in some shops  -- as it slicks up the internals and makes the sear itself almost impervious to wear.

Great looking gun.

Yeah, I asked about that, but their standard procedure is to mask off the sear. I think that hard chroming would be much the same as surface hardening, something that Jim Miossi says is inferior to an actual hard sear.

Virgil's shop is well versed in CZ's and other pistols, but their greatest expertise is still in 1911's, and qaulity 1911 sears are already north of 60 RC. He'd probably do it. I plan on converting to Miossi's hard sear whenever he comes out with a hardened hammer, so it's no biggie.

But I can't see how it would be inferior to plating the existing sear?   Stock sears, while hard, are NOT as hard as the sears that Jim is selling....

I can't think of how many folks I've talked with, over the past couple of years who had the internals plated whent he rest of the gun was done.  More than a few have bragged about how the chromed internals, including the sear, have kept their crispness...

You have to understand, however, that I'm not an expert in these matters -- and just because it doesn't make sense to me, doesn't mean it doesn't make sense.
