I like my mag tension spring... 97B heres why
« on: June 09, 2005, 03:58:33 PM »
i have been shooting handguns for awhile mostly glocks, star BM's and now the wonderful 97B,,, i like to go hiking with my gun in my back pocket, it is a glock 23 in 40cal... nice and light,,, anyway i went hiking couple yrs ago and my mag  fell out, had to back track like a mile,,, i found that with drop free mags it was suseptible to this, i am not an ISPC shooter nor do i care to be, i like to point shoot and am very good at it,,, i also think 13 rds in mag and one in pipe is plenty firepower, and if you get in a shoot out...lol.... i do not see a problem expelling a couple rds while looking for cover and then changing mags nice and calmly,,, (((REMEMBER GUNFIGHTERS WHO WERE COOL UNDER PRESSURE CALM AND STEADY were the ones that lived))) not the one who could pop off lots of ammo, and reload in a milla second)))) ,,, point is that i traded all my drop free mags for NON DROP FREE early models... the do not come out unless a little tug is implemented,,,, I THINK THIS IS MUCH better,,, i like knowing the mag WILL ALWAYS BE THERE and ready,,,, now that i have a 97B and it has a mag tensioner KUDO's!!!!!!!! great job CZ!!!! i like reliable firepower ... rather than games of dropping mags for .0005 milliseconds of reloading.... having ammo avail when needed is much for important than quick mag changes,,, that's my $.02... as for mag disconnect HATE em DUMBEST thing ever put on a gun..........thank god cz does'nt have that either... great gun all together, just wish grip was a little smaller as my hands are not that large,,, other than that accurate , reliable etc. etc..

And, if you get another CZ, you can bend the mag break in the opposite direction from the way usually recommended to make the mags drop free.  (Bend it TOWARD the front of the gun, rather than toward the main spring.)

Its an easy adjustment, either way.

There's no reason to go bending on a good spring that's doing it's job properly. If you ever want to have your mags fall free just call up the parts guys at CZ in Kansas City, Kansas and order a replacement spring. Keep the original one and your better off. If you get tired of mags falling all over the place you can put the original spring back in place. Also it's good to have all the parts if you ever decide to sell it. :smokin

The only people who love to eject their magazines into the sand are shooting IPSC competitions where speed reloading is allowed.  I agree that the mag brake is a good feature for any other type of shooting.

Anyone shooting in a timed competition requiring reloads --  and that's more than just IPSC (IDPA, Police League and Glock shoots immediately come to mind) -- benefit from being able to eject the magazines quickly.

Having the mags drop free can be the difference between a reload taking 10-15 seconds and taking 4-5 seconds.  In some matches, that's the difference between first and last place.

If you don't like drop-free mags, its pretty easy, at least with CZs, to make them retain the mags.   (You don't have the option with the more recent EAA guns.)
