Any tritium sights pre-drilled?
« on: October 24, 2011, 08:05:59 PM »
I am not to crazy about having my gunsmith drill my front sight to install night sights. Do any come pre-drilled for the pin?

I am new to CZs and I don't like the idea of someone drilling on my slide unless they can drill the sights before putting them on. Drills are not the most precise tools unless they have a drill press.

understood.
another way to install, is to have them put the sight in, then mark both sides with a small scribe. then pull the sight out and with it in a vise. use a small round file to make the groove.
no drill needed.

Thanks! Sounds like a good way to do it. I'll take it to my local GS when my gear comes in.

I'm buying some tritium sights soon too.

That's the same worry i have is whether my gunsmith has a drill press (which the really should). I for sure wouldn't let them use a hand held drill. No way.

I would rather drill it myself if that was the case.  But the filing idea sounds pretty good. I'll proly see what there opinion would be on that.

What size round file would work for this?

I bet we could ship our slides to them for the install. It would be cheaper if we could buy them drilled though.

i would prefer to have them already drilled that way I have less down time.  While it is out of commision in transit I have to carry big and uncomfortable.

vegas! you can drill the front sight yourself.i too was worried about installing a new front sight but it was easier than i thought.bought the right drill bit from cz custom, fitted their 1.5 mm fiber optic sight to the front groove, put the slide in a padded vice and the drilling went like a breeze.most sights that are metal are soft enough the drill walks right thru.your only taking a very small amount off of the bottom flat of the sight .i filed and fitted the front  sight so a light tapping seated the sight firmly into the back of the groove and the pin hole drilled in place gives me the tightest tolerance possable to keep it in place.i use black electricians tape to cover any part of the slide or sights you want to protect and once the installation is complete just pull the tape off.

Thanks mkd! I am sure that process has been done 1000s of times without problems. I will call my gunsmith when my P01 gets here from budsgunshop. He is a talented guy. I will buy the drill bit if he doesn't have it.

I emailed CZcustom.com about pre-drilling the front sight and got this response.
Quote
You are probably referring to the front sight. The answer is no since the
hole isn't exactly in the same place on every gun and you would end up with
a loose front sight.

The correct size is a #47 drill bit.  I went to a local tool shop, bought one for 75 cents and drilled the hole for my CZ82 meporlight with a hand drill.  I then used s front sight pin from CZUSA.   Since the slide is already drilled and the hole acts as a  pilot hole, this is a no-brainer.  This was one of the easiest home gun smithing projects I ever did.  I would in no way pay a gunsmith to do something so simple that I can do in 5 minutes.

just make sure you keep the drill supported and not rest it on the slide as you drill the groove. just give it the attention it deserves.
I also drill with the rotation of the bit rotating to the rear of the slide..so the front sight will not walk forward and ruin the fit.
