Hunting in Arizona could become quite a bit more interesting...
« on: January 24, 2012, 01:30:31 PM »
We have one bill already assigned a number, that would remove the magazine limit for semi-auto rifles and shotguns. Currently the limit is 5. I would like to see that happen so I could use my vz-58 for hunting, and the smallest magazine in the US in 20 rounds...and I think I have the only one. 30 rounds might be considered a wee bit overkill, but what if I chose to use an FAL forbear - 20 rounds instead of 4 might make me feel a little better, and if I run into one of those wonderful free range unlicensed pharmaceutical growers, well, the social diatribe might become quite lively, where a larger magazine capacity could be VERY useful!
The next part is the odd one, but it makes sense when you think about it. Shoot, miss, what happens...animal runs away, scared by the loud noise. Well, Representative Gowan is about to introduce a bill to allow lawful suppressors for hunting.

I wonder how much Angus and his crew would charge to mount suppressors on my 527M and vz-58...

I sincerely envy you Arizona guys!!!!  I love my bird hunting and prefer to do it with a SxS and am still lusting for a SxS rifle,  but I prefer that the limitations on how many rounds I have available while hunting be self imposed rather than by Government regulation.

As to "free range farmers"......have you seen this???

Agreed 2few.  While I sincerely hope people are trained better than to start spraying with a 30 round magazine (or any magazine really) after they miss, I don't really see the need to have a government-imposed magazine restriction on hunting weapons.  Interesting note about the suppressors too.  I'm sort of surprised those are banned to begin with, as I can't really see any justification for it.

In Washington shotgun is limited to 3, but no mag cap on rifle.

If 5rd. magazines are not available you can still take one of your Hi-Caps and block it so it'll only take five rounds and be legal.

More important to me is House Bill HB2457 which will legalize possession of weapons while hunting. Current G&F policy makes it OK to carry certain weapons ie handguns while hunting with a bow or muzzle loader, but there should be NO restriction on my Rights just because I'm hunting especially by a State agency rule.

Proposed law....

"The possession of a weapon used for taking wildlife does not preclude, and the commission shall not prohibit, the possession of other legal weapons or devices as long as the other weapons or devices are not used to take wildlife in the hunt."

The suppressor bil vanished, can't find it, no idea what happened.
Of course we don't want to spray the neighborhood, that's NOT the idea, but in Southern AZ you face a distinct possibility of running into drug or human smugglers, and while a 5 round mag in my vz-58 might be perfect, I'd like the option of at least bringing a 30 rounder to get me out of trouble deep if I so choose - current law says no.
I agree also to bringing other firearms, a rifle for protection from both 2 and 4 legged predators would be nice when bow hunting, no matter where you are, even just a folding KelTec SU16C. I always wear a sidearm when hunting if for nothing but the coup de grace.
Blocked magazines are a grey area, and MIGHT be good enough for the game warden, might not. I prefer to be rather unambiguous.
Perhaps there are many who would object to this, but as long as our border is wide open and the feds not only refusing to secure it, but posting large sections of Arizona as unsafe for American citizens to walk our own soil because of this abject failure, then I want the option. I don't intende to shoot at a deer thirty times running, that's just wrong.
20 is just fine. :o 8) KIDDING!

Most folks can't get any sort of accurate picture of life in Arizona. The 'Not from around here...' syndrome kicks in. It has no similarity at all to most other states.

Working a patented claim on BLM land I spent many months on a remote claim in the desert. Nearest town was many miles away. The only road was dirt & rocky gravel, 4WD being real handy. Most times at least a week went by without a single vehicle traveling the road, usually a couple of weeks. Sum zero Law Enforcement.

In the event of coming across growers or other bad nasties a firefight might occur. We're not talking about tossing a few rounds back & forth & good to go. No, it was wide open, flat, miles of gullies & ravines with some various cactus scattered here & there among the rattlers.

Unlikely to happen upon a single grower. More likely 2 or 3, with at least one tasked as armed lookout while others 'worked' the crop. You might encounter 2 or 3 active shooters, well armed & determined, nothing to lose. A serious protracted gunfight might go on for hours, not seconds!

'Going hunting' is no different than prospecting/mining because nobody but the grower knows exactly where you're going to stumble on a plantation, or heavily armed smugglers. It's a whole different world that fully defies any armchair quarter-backing. Very much have to live it to get the full picture.

If you plan to keep on living it that may require some serious firepower and a whole bunch of ammo. Still can't wait to get back    :)

As I understand it the justification was too many people were hunting deer with suppressor equiped guns back in the old days when they were legal.  I guess Kansas has too many deer cause we are allowed to use suppressed rifles starting this year.  Used to be signs up at all Kansas enterance's that said "Welcome to Kansas....Please set your watch back fifty years."  Glad to see Kansas has joined the free world now.   8)

Magazine limit is BYE BYE! The Governor signed it yesterday, but since it's not an "emergency measure" (even I couldn't figure out how to make that one an emergency), it won't take effect until 90 days after the legislature adjourns Sin Die, meaning "we're done, goodbye!" 8)
