Is the CZ 100 safe for dry fires??
« on: April 27, 2002, 06:52:35 AM »
I would like to know if the CZ 100 is safe/ok for dry fires?
My previous pistols is a Taurus PT 145, in its catalog the manufacturer advise to avoid dry firing in this pistol.
In a gun magazine article, I learned that a cork or pad can be inserted in the camber so that the firing pin would not be damaged. Is the  100  safe to dry fire evn with out this stopper?

Firing pin is $45.00 from CZ-KC plus freight.
Is it worth the risk?

Purchase some snap caps from your dealer. They are very inexpensive and are worth the money. Better to be safe than sorry. CZ has been packaging a plastic snap cap with handguns recently so check to see if one is with the gun.

I was told by the range officer at the local range that I visit that I even use a old .40 casing in the chamber to dry fire my CZ100. I dont know if I should do that. My CZ100 did'nt come with a snap cap, and I can't seem to find one in .40 anywhere.

Would it really be okay to fire against an old casing in my chamber?

I once tried to buy snap caps from my local gunshop and they laughed and acted like they had never heard of them (despite being in business for at least 25 years).  After seriously questioning my need to dry fire a gun, they suggested using spent casing.  I have tried it, but it makes an annoying springy sound and vibration that you probably would not get with a snap cap.  I'm not sure spent casing really does that much to protect your firing pin, either.

Just a thought.  Do you leave your internal hammer cocked when you store it?  Probably not, and so, dry firing should not really hurt the firing pin.  In my opinion any ways.  I have a S&W 622 that has an internal hammer as well.  It is something you cannot avoid.
