Brand new SP-01 - Anything to do before firing?
« on: May 10, 2012, 10:38:17 PM »
I ordered from cz custom on Wednesday; fedex tracking shows delivery for tomorrow!  8)

I'm new to guns so I'm hoping there's a manual in the box that will clue me in on things that are second nature to most of you folks.

Is there anything special I have to do or is the gun good to go out of the box?  Clean, oil, etc, ??

I'll take any help or knowledge that you all have to offer!

Great site - thanks everyone!

John K., Welcome to the forum and congratulations.  Your getting a good shooter.

Since your new to guns, my recommendations are to read the manual that comes with your pistol, and familiarize yourself with the action and field strip procedures.  Do not have any ammo in the area, just the pistol.   Pull the trigger both DA and SA to get the feel.   Try the safety with the pistol cocked.  Insert a magazine (NO AMMO) and rack the slide to cock the hammer.  The slide will stay back because of the empty mag.  Use the slide release and try the SA trigger. Push the mag release and the mag should drop to the floor.  Follow the field strip instructions for removing the slide, barrel and recoil spring.  Reassemble it.  In other words, exercise it to get familiar with the controls and the feel.  Do it all again.

The last NIB I've seen was my son's, and it came pretty clean.  Look for any signs of any gooey lube and if you notice anything not clean and free moving clean it up with some Hoppe's #9 or similar.  I would put a drop or two of any good "oil" on the slide rails, trigger spring area and on the barrel while its field stripped.  This will get you going for a start.  There are posts here you can find that go into details on cleaning and lubing as every shooter has their own preferrences.

Remember  "ALWAYS" treat it like a loaded gun ready to fire.  If it's 9mm, Wal-Marts Winchester white Box or Federal 115gr FMJ is good to break-in the gun.  After several hundred rds it will be noticeably smoother.  It's like a new car,  it does improve as the parts seat.

You're going to enjoy this pistol.  Let us know if you have any questions and tell us how your first shoot goes.  Pictures are preferred! ;D

1. Take it out of the box

2. Fondle it, admire it, show wife, kids, friends etc.

3. Clean and lube

4. Post pics on czfirearms.us

5. Fondle and admire a little more

6. If you have snap caps dry fire 100 times or more to get used to the trigger.

7. Head to range with at least 100 rounds (more is better)

8. Take pics of your best target and post said target on czfirearms.us and tell us how much you love your new CZ.

9. Plan your next CZ purchase.

Works for me.

I've been pricing ammo at Walmart for a few weeks.  WWB 9mm isn't too bad but it's gonna add up real quick.

I wish I could have picked up the kit too but I'll have to wait a couple weeks..

Thanks Duckie!

Welcome, and congratulations on the purchase, as well as the next CZs to come...

There is grease coating on parts, internal and external. It may be dry to the eye/hand, but there is. You need to clean it thoroughly, and using a degreaser in addition to a CLP would not be a bad idea.

For lubrication, check out this thread:

Here is the manual while you wait,

Now go out and find your local IDPA or USPSA club and shoot the gun.

Pick up a .35 cal (9mm) Bore Snake along with some good gun oil.  The bore snake makes cleaning the barrel a snap.

If you have a couple FTFs within the first 100 rounds or so (Remington UMC is often an issue), don't get concerned.  The gun should break in after a few hundred rounds and will shoot like a charm!

Enjoy!  You picked up a good one!!

An old trick I learned years ago when playing with muzzle-loading rifles is to put a little dab of good low temperature chassis grease (or some TW-25b) on the sear tip and single-action hammer notch. On the CZ-75 SP-01 just pull the hammer all the way back with your thumb while pulling the trigger with your trigger finger, and then put a little dab of grease on and between the two parts. It only takes a few seconds but it can improve the trigger feel.

A few drops of gun oil on the fire control group and on both sides of the trigger bar where it bears against the inside of the frame will certainly help trigger feel as well.

The FAQ gunsmithing/maintenance section of this forum has some good info and advice on taking the pistol apart and smoothing the trigger pull if you are so inclined. Watch out for the tiny "Firing pin block lever spring". Don't lose it!  :'(
