97B for Hunting?

With my life dedicated to Teaching I have to get out and enjoy my other non-paying passion of the outdoors.  I am looking into what ammo if any would be most suitable for carrying the 97B for hunting as a "Backup"  ;) to my hunting rifles or Mathews Z7 Extreme.

I understand that there are certain laws in certain states but just a general question and am looking forward to some stories/photos of other users if you have done this.

Also I travel all up and down the Eastern Seaboard and will run into multiple game animals. If there are preferences for certain ones please be my guest.

I would recommend 460 Rowland, but then you would have to alter the gun.

Maybe Shmecky will chime in and offer his thoughts.

Yea the 460 round would definately do it :) my dad has a S&W 460 and It's a hoss.  Overall rediculously powerful and accurate(maybe due to 8(guess) inch barrel).

But I will look more into the Buffalo Bores but keep the suggestions coming. Like I said would really enjoy some stories with your 97B

Have killed large Deer with the standard pressure .45 ACP and it works just fine.  For larger and more dangerous Predators, I would choose a .454 Casull Revolver.  Probably a Ruger Super Redhawk.

Then there's also a possible conversion of your 97B to .45 Super.  Just add a Sprinco Recoil Reducer and an 18 lb Wolff Recoil Spring and you're there.  However, the .45 Super, like many other Cartridges, is largely a Handloading proposition.  I've converted my older .45 Witness to .45 Super on occasion and it really hits hard!  Have not killed anything with it yet, as it's largely been backup to my .30/06 when hunting Feral Hogs.  The .30/06 has always gotten the job done!  So far.

Ballistically, my .45 Super handloads run a surplus Remington 185 grn JHP at 1170 fps, which is a conservative loading.

Have given good advice.  The Buffalo Bore +P+ .45 ACP load is fairly close to a 44 magnum.  However, +P 45 ACP is plenty powerful enough for deer and should be pretty easy to find. 

Ultimately shot placement is the key.
