How to clean a muzzle brake?

Hi everyone. Can anyone give me direction about cleaning a permanently attached brake? Didnt give it much thought before i had a smith put it on. Forgot to ask him when i picked it up.

On one of my Ruger Mini-14's, which has a permanently attached Fabian Muzzle Brake, I just soak the end of the Rifle in a jar of either Kerosene or thinned Mineral Oil for a couple of days or so, then spray the Muzzle Brake out with Disc Brake Cleaner.  It's worked well, so far.

I was wondering the same thing as Striper Sniper. I'll have to give kerosene and brake cleaner a shot.

I havent even test fired it yet and it appears to be rusting!

rust will form very quickly, if left unoiled.  I recommend cleaning rust with pb blaster.  once rust is dealt with for regular cleaning completely immerse in any kind of solvent and brush the best you can, then dry somewhat, and thoroughly coat with any tenacious oil.  I like break free clp, or sta-bil fogging oil.  Full immersion is your best friend, for both cleaning and protecting muzzle brake.

Thinned Mineral Oil (aka Ballistol) can also be used as a preservative oil.

Thanks obiwan and jwc. Gonna pick some up. For now i put a light coat of rem oil on it.
