Hello, new member first ?
« on: September 22, 2012, 10:37:55 AM »
Hi, new here & to 82's. I've been reading most of the posts, refinishing mostly, anyway I seem to recall reading that some parts are blued, can't find the post now. So are any of the parts blued? and if so will they take a finish like Duracoat without striping to bare metal?
Thanks, Rick

The hand guard is blued. You should contact the Duracoat and ask them if it needs to me stripped.

A blued part will take DuraCoat if it is meticulously degreased. It holds best if you "rough up" the surface a little with fine sandpaper or something similar. DuraCoat likes to have something to "grip" but it will stick to almost anything if it is completely free of oil. Even the oil from your fingers will be a problem. The most important trick to getting DuraCoat to last is to let it cure completely before you subject it to friction or abrasion. Unfortunately, that means you have to let it sit for 3-4 weeks.

DuraCoat will indeed stick to blued parts as long as they're prepped properly (the most important step of the refinishing). Paint stripping gel will remove the baked-on finish of an 82s frame and slide.
