New Full Size 10mm Witness Wonder Finish
« on: January 28, 2013, 07:34:30 PM »
I was finally able to pick up my new full size Witness 10mm Wonder Finish.  To my surprise, it came with a more squared type slide.

I'm hoping that the heavier slide will help dampen recoil and that I'll be able to avoid the cracking slide issue that some have encounered in the past.  Interestingly, the front sight has a red dot instead of a white dot.  I'm going to go ahead and order a Henning guiderod.  I'll start my 10mm loads on the mild side.  That is, when/if my brass shows up from Starline.  It was suppose to be produced at the end of this month, but they updated the production date to March.  Three additional 15rd magazines have already arrived from EAA, so I'm good to go as far as that goes.  I'll keep everyone updated about shooting it.

Consider yourself lucky. It's a toss up on what you get based on where you order from and what the supplier happens to have at the time. I have the compact version of the same pistol, and i hoped for the squared slide and the tac rail. I got neither. :/

Nevertheless, it is a great shooter, and with the henning guiderod, and a stiffer spring there's pretty much nothing it won't eat.

The magazine pictured is a little odd though. Did it come with the pistol? i haven't seen the black followers come with a new witness in a while, and i've never seen one with that line running full length down the side.

Those are the new Mac Gar made 10mm mags to stop internal round nose dives.

Yes, it came with the pistol.  The three that I received directly from EAA are identical.

I see... interesting stuff. Well let us know how the new mags, and more importantly, the pistol function when you get a chance to take it for a spin.

Very very Nice!  8)  Congratulations!  :)

I like the heavier squared Slide profile better than the rounded one.  My 2004 .45 Witness has the older more squared profile with no forward serrations.

The frame with the rail is longer than the standard frame, so I dunno if they have it on a Compact frame.  I wish I had the no-rail version on my Match.  Go figure.

I like the heavier squared slide on this one simply because it will help lessen the recoil and (in theory) help reduce the chances that I'll have a slide cracking problem.  I was pawing on my full size steel frame 9mm Witness last night.  I actually like the more rounded slide on it.

Lol, the grass is always greener right? I wanted the rail so i could mount a light for nightstand duty, but i guess it was a blessing in disguise that i didn't get it, or finding a holster for it would have been even more of a nightmare than it already was.

As for the rail on the compacts, i've seen them, but never held one. The slightly longer dustcover comes just short of full length, leaving around 1/4" or so of slide showing.

Back to the point though, i think the squared slide will suit you well. Almost all of the cracked slides i came across during my own research were the newer rounded slides. Until i put a MUCH stronger spring in my rounded slide i was afraid to shoot anything more than the most watered down 10mm i could find. Now i still tend to shoot weaker stuff since its cheaper and i don't reload yet, but i have since put a few boxes of some pretty stout stuff (re: buffalo bore) through it with absolutely no ill effects.

Fortunately I do reload, so I'll be able to work up my loads accordingly.  From what I've read, AA #7 is a good powder for 10mm.  I already have some that I've been using for my 9x23 Witness.  I have a 22# recoil spring in my 9x23 Witness and everything cycles.  I'm going to start with the same in the 10mm.

I have several of the Witness 10 mm pistols. I would recommend putting a Wolff #20 spring for normal shooting and a #22 for higher pressure cartages.
If for no other reason that the spring that came with your 10mm will have you looking for your brass 30 to 50 feet from where you are standing. By installing the heaver spring, the brass lands 4 to 6 feet away.

Look what showed up today from Starline!

I already have powder, primers and bullets, so now all I've got to do is load 'em up.
