Registering a found gun?
« on: March 23, 2013, 01:21:31 AM »
So long story short my father recently bought a car from a friend. After cleaning the car thoroughly he found a Beretta 21a under the floor mats. Normally the protocol would be to give it back but the person has passed away. My dad doesn't have his permit but I do. What can I do to register this in my name? Has any one here done this before? I'm sure it varies state to state.

You are lucky. I have no advice for you, just wanted to tell you. I'm not completely sure that you even do have to register it however.

Check your state and local firearms laws. If you are fortunate enough to live in a free state, you have no obligation (and in many cases no ability) to register anything. Now on the other hand if you live in a Communist country like CA, MA, NY, CT, exc., you are "supposed" to register according to dear leaders guidelines. Hope that answers your question.

Unfortunately for the subjects of these foreign countries, failure to register firearms when told to by dear leader can result in being charged with a felony.

Why use 911 when it's faster to use 1911 or 9mm?

Good point!!!!  If in fact the OP is in Ct, then he does not need to register the gun, but IS required to get a pistol permit in order to legally own the gun.

I think I would have local LE run the serial number first to see if it is stolen. If that is a stolen gun, keeping it would be bad juju. If it isn't stolen, then hey, the car came with a great accessory, beats a CD player all hollow.

Depending on where the OP lives, if it is stolen, it could also get the OP hooked up with a "stolen gun" charge.

Sadly, not everywhere is Mayberry.

Good point, unfortunately being in law enforcement myself, I can sadly say that there is no good way to check to see if the gun was stolen. We are not even supposed to run serial #'s through NCIC unless we are doing an official investigation (though this will probably change with dear leaders new policies). Heck some PD's in some of these nasty states may even arrest you if it turned out it was stolen when you went to get it checked out. Our county is in a very sad state of affairs.

Easy to avoid, move to a small town where half the officers will recognize you from town hall meetings, local events, parades, etc.

That's what I do.
