Anyone hollow pointed a cast bullet?
« on: September 04, 2013, 01:15:43 PM »
No, not casting a hollow point, which I would love to do, ( but cannot dream of affording a good 9mm hollow point mold), but a good friend of mine, the genius who built the 527CSR stock, is tossing around the idea of making me a hollow pointing tool like the Forster setup with collet and drill bit. Obviously these won't expand nearly as reliably as factory fodder, but I would like to see what I could get, playing with alloys. Better than nothing in a pinch, and might be grand fun to experiment with, eh?
Anyone?

JiminPhoenix on the castboolit site used to make a jig that was reasonable that you could use any drillpress or cordless drill to hollowpoint a bullet.  He had different inserts for different calibers, and you could use different sized or profiled bits to change the hollowpoint.  I still intend on getting one sometime.  The price was pretty reasonable, IIRC.

You'd be surprised how reliable castboolit hollowpoints are.  Soft alloys need a small, shallow HP and hard alloys need a deep, wide cavity.
