main spring on CZ75
« on: October 30, 2013, 06:03:40 PM »
OK, Im pulling a brain fart here.
Im installing a 13 lb CGW works main spring.
How do I remove that flat leaf spring from the strut so I can pull it all the way out so I can replace the spring. Just cant see how to detach it . Do I remove the pin that holds the flat spring to the frame up at the top

Hi guys...My first post ...it's refreshing to see shooters that appreciate fine machines....I own CZ's...(I don't ponder why). In regard to your 13# main spring...I'm assuming you know to replace the firing pin spring at the same time or your weapon will be out of tune and have feed problems....Shooting a 75BD I learned the usual way of trial and error...working on American weapons for so long it takes a while to adjust to these ole Warsaw Pact Weapons. Absolutely appreciate forums such as this for the valuable info available.......I did speak to David at CGW and he verified my issue.....he's the point man for sure....have a CZ day!

Yes I know to replace the FP. Thats why you order the whole SD kit from him.
I have done the same thing to my compact and Rami but had forgotten how to pull that mainspring.
Everything back together now

This is another way for a quick hammer spring change,  but if yours has the actual mag "brake" with the long curved tang at the bottom that fits "around" the bottom pin, it works best if you cut most of this off, and leave enough tang to just tuck in behind the pin.  The Drop Free mag brakes don't have this curved tang and are easier to remove.

Wow,
This is really a great piece. Had no idea that the sear assembly came out in one piece. Great detail !!. If I should ever decide to mess with sanding and doing other work on my new stainless 75  ;)

The drop free brake on my 85 Combat has the loop at the bottom that surrounds the plug pin.

They must have changed them.
I had the right to remain silent...

but not the ability.

Painter, my bad.  I was referring to the stainless drop-free mag brakes from the Custom Shop ($10).
The curved tangs can be snipped off.  Just be sure to leave enough tang to hold the bottom of the brake in place when reassembled and the pin is in place.

I did not cut anything,,,left as is. I don't plan on pulling it apart and taking the spring out or any other mods anytime soon anyway. If I do it ain't that hard

No worries...

I've gotten pretty good at reshaping it so it will go back in.  :P

It really is a pita to get out even if you think you know what you're doing.

It really is a pita to get out even if you think you know what you're doing.

There's a couple of things I have learned about getting the mag brake out and back in.

#1. The hammer must be FULLY DOWN. If it is on the half cock notch the curl on the end of the brake will be impeded by the hammer tang.
While it is possible to remove and install a spring  without field stripping the weapon there is more clearance for the brake tail with the slide removed because the hammer can move further.
#2. If you opt to keep the curl then make sure it is slightly under 1/4" in diameter so there will be plenty of clearance for it to slip into the pocket in the end plug.
#3. I may have just reinvented the wheel but I went out in the shop and using a short piece of 1/4" stock I turned one end down to 3mm, the size of the pin, for a length of 6.5mm, .256". Now I can hold the plug in while I fit the mag brake and push the tool out with the pin. A very easy to make solution for a thorny problem.

Here is a link to a video showing the pin in use:

My mag (non)break is not hooked at the bottom.  It just pops out at the bottom and swings free on the upper hinge.  Pop it back in when I'm done.  8)

Exactly.
The ones with all the metal at the bottom, can be trimmed to do the exact same thing.
When I flattened the original 75B brake on an anvil to make it 'drop free,  this trimming was suggested here on the forum.  Did it,  and it makes changing hammer spring quick and easy.  The only tools needed are for the grip screws and anything that will push the bottom pin out..   Handy if you use a Kadet kit that needs heavier spring.
