New Redhead 28" 20g
« on: November 03, 2013, 06:52:47 PM »
I recently placed an order for a 28" Redhead in 20 gauge for both my wife and myself to use while shooting sport skeet/trap when we get together with our friends and wanted to hear about which if any additional chokes should be purchased along with recommendations for the best loads.

My 28ga Bobwhite came with F/IM/M/IC/C choke tubes and your Redhead should as well.

That's great news!  I ordered a couple of bore snakes in 20g to compliment the Otis kit and stocked up in 6, 7 1/2, 8 to check out the varying patterns this weekend.  About how many rounds did it take to break-in your Bobwhite?  I will probably get a Ringneck in 28 gauge/20 gauge depending on the feel of the Redhead this season.

Not sure what you mean by break-in here.  The gun should be reliable out of the gate.  When I had a redhead in 12g, it was pretty difficult to break open and even after thousands rounds was still pretty difficult to open.  On the other hand, a friend has a Huglu that falls open when you just push on the lever.  Best I can figure is these tend to vary quite a bit as they come from the factory.

As for chokes, pattern it first and see how it does.  If the factory chokes pattern well, you probably don't need to buy any additional chokes unless you simply want to (e.g., you like a certain look).  If you don't like how it patterns, then I would investigate some third party chokes.  Standard beretta/benelli chokes fit these guns, so you'll have an ample selection of chokes to choose from.  For loads, generally anything from 7 1/2 to 9 will work.  For longer-distance shooting (some stations on a clays course, handicap trap for S&G with a 20gauge, etc.) you'd look to 7 1/2, for anything shorter (skeet for sure, standard trap/clays) go with 8 or 9.

I've only run a box through my Bobwhite so far but it sure is sweet to shoot, love the double triggers. Like Bozwell, mine is quite stiff to open.

I think you're right about it being a little stiff to break open even after 100+ rounds from hitting a sporting clay course but I am getting used to it and think I would prefer the stiffness (especially right after purchasing) rather than it dropping down in a loose manner.

It shot perfectly and my buddy shot a couple of pairs with a single shot a few times so I was impressed.  He is already looking for a 20 gauge Browning but can't find one for less than $1500 that he really liked so I am quite satisfied with my Redhead.  :)

As for chokes, I took your advice and just stuck with IC/C CZ provided and had a ball.  Still placed an order for a 20g Skeet for $16 so I will have 6 total.  I will post the results and see if there are any improvement.  Thanks for the responses!
