VZ 58 w/ Scout Scope?
« on: November 25, 2013, 11:43:41 PM »
Hello, I am new to the forum and am a proud VZ 58/2008 owner and am looking to do a scout rifle set up as this gun will be both a defensive carbine in WROL and a Hunting Rifle in the meantime. My questions are ? A) Who hunts with this rifle B) of those that do what optics are you running and lastly C) what are the most accurate hunting loads out there for the VZ? Thanks

These thread are in your same league/question, so they may be of interest:

I think, that if you want maximum accuracy, you'd need to bench rest a number of rounds and see what loads run the best out of your gun. Also, some folks that own CSA 58s or other builds, may run differently than 2008 rifles.

What distance do you plan to shoot at? I think the 7.62x39 is fine for short distances.

the Hornady 7.62x39 SST rounds have been very accurate for me, and a fair price for a hunting/defensive load; I've consistently paid $35 locally per 50rds.  I will admit that I have not tried many "Premium" loads in the VZ, or my SKS for that matter, but my neighbor consistently gets white tail deer with the wolf&bear soft points in his Yugo SKS. It "kills them mighty good." But hunting in Georgia beyond (or even out to for that matter) it pretty unheard of due to tree density.

Thanks all, I check out those thread and they kinda helped and in regards to ammo. I looked at the SST's and will order some of those as well as some Lapua ammo. Still trying to track down some Sako. If Hornady and Lapua doesn't wring every drop of accuracy out of this thing nothing will lol. Thanks again.

the rifle in sheepdogs second link has the scope mounted way too high
it will be impossible to have any kind of cheek-weld  even with straight stock

be aware that scout scopes have a very limiting field of view  beyond about the 4x magnification

hi lux has a new version of their  LER2-7x32 and that is a very decent scope for the money
the new one has a bdc reticle tailored to the 308 but very usable for the 7.62x39

I've used the crap out of one with the plex reticle, it's been thru hell and hi water on a rifle with significantly more recoil and it's still flawless even though it's bearing some scars

Have not hunted yet with my Vz2008, but I have killed Wild Hogs with my AKM using Russian Tula so called Hollowpoints.  Effective, regardless of the Bullet design.
I have also killed 2 Deer with my Chinese SKS and the Silver Bear 125 grain Softpoints which expand pretty well and favor that load the most.

Currently, I'm using a Hammers Red/Green Dot Sight with a 2x Magnifier on my Vz2008, but were I to go with a Scope, I would look for a good 2x Pistol Scope with a 30mm Tube.

I normally leave a bushnell trs32 red dot up front on some Bonesteel rails. I've got the irons sighted in pretty good and since the red dot co-witnesses the iron sights, I just set the dot on top of the front sight post and its good to go.

I just put a Burris 2-7x LER on it to try out .  2-4X seems perfect, 7X is a little hard to track. I've got the cheek riser on a Fab A4 stock. Lifting the riser about an inch gives a good position for cheek weld to see through the scope, for me.

I'll be trying this out tomorrow at my buddy's field. It's going to be cold up in Maine!  I'll try to get some pics.

Thanks again folks.

Franz- I check out that scope and thats about what I'm looking for thanks for the firsthand review

Knoxy- I look forward to the test results.

Once I figure out the setup and get some Lapua and Sako ammo I'm gonna see what the VZ can really do. I'll be sure to post pics

I did get out for a bit today but it was pretty cold and wet up here. Didn't get to sight in the scope but I did fire a mag through it to confirm that the shells weren't hitting the scope. They all cleared it just fine.

Thats good to know, thanks Knoxy. I'm stuck trying to decided between the NEA and Bonesteel rails. I'd go with the FAB polymer rails but I'm worried about it holding zero.

Note that the Bonesteel upper rail is very low (great for short red dots). I had to use some high rings to get the scope up over the sight block.

I'll keep that in mind knoxy, I have some 1" high rings from my AR so that the scope would come over the front sight post. You think these would be too high? I plan on putting the M4 stock adapter on there
so that is a factor as well.
