Preferred Caliber Weight for CZ Pistols
« on: November 29, 2013, 09:14:16 AM »
Hello Angus,

I have read that 9mm CZ pistols have been optimized around 124gr round. Is this correct? I thought I would go to the source.

Thanks!

I'm not Angus, but:
Europe did the primary development of the 9mm (9x19) ammunition.  Their military and police settled into 124gr as the standard.  NATO reflects that.  The 1 in 10 +/- barrel twist rate comes from that development.
Many reputable places on the web reflect this generalization.
One quick look here, gives a little more info as to how and why:         http://www.shootingtimes.com/2013/04/30/the-rise-of-the-9mm-luger/

This interesting sticky by "FEG" gives the early history:        http://www.czfirearms.us/index.php?topic=14702.0

I've no doubt Angus Hobdell has more definitive info available with his shooting travels and CZ contacts in Europe.

I read this on Enos. Maybe Angus can confirm if this is true or not.

Angus Hobdell recommends 124's at 1.11, 130 or so power factor

Angus posted the same 'here' several years back.  I still shoot the bullet and load he was using at the time---n320 under 125 gr Zero JHPs.

I normally shoot the 124g or 121g JHP from Zero, I prefer the N320 because it is very soft to shoot and VERY clean burning, also its burn rate is not affected by heat or altitude. Great for competing in different arenas. There is always a  conflict between soft shooting and most accurate.
I have found that the most accurate loads use slower burning powder but produce significantly more recoil. Which will of course create more wear on the pistol.

So there is the caveat, are you shooting for precision or for "acceptable precision" with soft recoil.

I hate to post loads because there is no control over peoples reloading technique, but I used 4.0g of the N320 and attempt to make a 129 Power Factor.  (Weight of bullet x Average Velocity "FPS" ? by 1000)

Angus Duhhhh!

Sounds similar to what I load. I'm at 3.9gr of n320 using 124gr MG jhp @ 1.085 OAL.

Thanks for the info Angus. Can you confirm what OAL you are loading to?
