philosophy of use .410?

I really like these light cz shotguns, mallard, bobwhite etc. I assume these a for field work and not for trap? I have done neither so just seek to be enlightened.

I can't speak for the 410 but I shoot clays with a 28ga Bobwhite and have a ton of fun. I think the smaller gauges offer more of a challenge but you will probably bust more with a 12 or 20ga.

I started out on a .410 for a shotgun. Used it for hunting squirrels, ducks and deer. what more could you ask for? My father saw me get to the point he knew I needed a larger shotgun so he traded off my .410 for a .20ga.  I never liked the 20ga and still miss that .410, I am on a mission to find another some day.

.410 is pricy ammo though for what you get.

I started out with a "I have no clue whatsoever" brand bolt action .410.  It has been passed around everyone in the family for a first shotgun.  I hunted rabbits, pheasants, grouse...you name it.

It's a great starting cartridge; low recoil, (typically) light weight, and still packs enough punch for upland bird hunting.  As armed hiker mentioned, it's just expensive for what you get.  I think that for someone who handloads, you could do better with a 20 gauge and low recoil 3/4 oz loads in a short barreled single shot.

I'm seriously considering one of those double trigger models. I missed a nicely engraved bobwhite on gunbroker, that must have been special order of some sort.
