Magpul Grip?
« on: January 14, 2014, 09:08:14 AM »
Anyone mod a MP Grip to fit their VZ 58???  It would add a 922r part.  Thanks.

I've done it with the US Palm AK grip so it's definitely doable.

I bought the MP MOE (AK) grip to try and modify for use with the VZ... but will be returning it to Brownells (thankfully, no time limit on returns).  The AK MOE's hollow area at the top of the grip made it impossible (in my mind) to convert for VZ use.  The amount of space needed to be shaved off, would cut right into the hollow areas.

I also bought the Doublestar AR grip adapter for AKs... but decided to return it as well.  However, unlike the MOE... I think this would've been able to be converted for VZ use (and then I could slap one of my extra AR MOE grips on it).  Ultimately, I got lazy and just got the FAB grip.  I don't like it as much as the MOE... but it'll do.   :P

As a comparison, I got an AK Hogue grip to fit just fine on the vz-2008. Screwed in the grip, letting the lip running around spot for the original grip imprint on the grip. Removed grip, cut into the imprint about 1/4 inch with and exacto knife, shaved off a bit of the grip for safety clearance, and it fit like a glove. 5 minutes of work, and darn comfy.

Check out Ronin's grips.  The Galil Ultra grip is what I'm running an it's great.   The only gripe I have is that the texture is just on the sides and smooth on the front and back straps.  I'm either going to take a torch to my knife and slice grooves or at a minimum rough those up w/ a coarse sandpaper...

The FAB defense ones look okay, but it looks like a lot of folks have issues with the battery storage door failing.  So if that's just a temporary convenience, then I'd prefer to go w/ one of the Ronin options.

Shaving down AK grips obviously works as well most of the time.

I have one of Ronin's Galil Ultras also and I love it.  It completely changed the feel of the rifle.  You'r right about the texture being a little smooth - I've considered stippling it, but haven't done it yet out of fear of ruining it.

I'll second the recommendation to skip the AK grip and just buy one of Ronin's.

Here's mine:

After thinking about this for a bit, I've been motivated to give it a whirl with the Magpul grip. I like the profile a bit better than the US-Palm. I'll post a thread when it warms enough for me to get to dremmeling in the garage.

I would like to see a close up of that magpul grip from the underside .  It seems that the grip base sticks out a tad.
