New to me (Surplus) CZ83 coming my way
« on: March 29, 2014, 03:35:36 PM »
Need advice on the following:

1.  Defensive Ammo - what works for your CZ 83 in your experience?  Looking for a reliable defensive round.  Winchester PDX1 and Hornady CD are available close to where I live.

2.  Any recommendation on a IWB holster?  I like the affordable Alien Gear but they don't make one for the 83.  Please advise.  There is a hybrid "Homestead" in Amazon.com,  any experience with this one?

3.  Grips - i have small hands so I'm always looking for reduced grip.  Let me know if you know of a good option.

I got mine from iAmmo.com. Will post again once I get it and get a chance to play with it.

I use Silver Bear JHP for defensive ammo in my 82.  I believe they make it for .380 as well.  I have had a Stoner IWB leather holster for 82/83.  They aren't as pricey and they work very well for me.

Can I ask what you paid, shipped?

I've only tried 102g Remington golden sabers. I would like to try some Hornady CD and Speer gold dots.

No help for an IWB. You looking for leather or kydex or hybrid?

Are you going to be adding night sights as well?

1.  Around $244.  Impulse buy, seems to be in line with gunbroker.

2. Any.  Leather clip or hybrid are what usually carry.

3.  Not sure.  Nice to have but expensive for CZs.

I have just ordered a box of Buffalo Bore 9X18 Makarov +P Ammo - 95 gr. JHP, 20 rounds for $27.36.  It's expensive, I know, but I wanted to give it a try.  Their 9x18 =P ammo can be found here:https://www.buffalobore.com/index.php?l=product_list&c=64.  That being said, almost everyone swears by Hornady Critical Defense.  Also, this is interesting: http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/bot26.htm

Penetration is king. Unless it gets the required penetration. I'd stick with FMJ. Anything under 9mm. I go with a good quality FMJ. If I carried my CZ 82 in 9x18, that's what I'd do. I carry my vz. 70 sometimes for quick runs (.32 ACP). And that gets an FMJ load as well.

Buffalo Bore makes good stuff and I see they make some .380 loads as well. But man, there stuff is stupid expensive. And unfortunately, they don't seem to list any penetration information.

I can't say for the Buffalo Bore stuff. But from everything I've seen of many of the loads available for the under 9mm calibers. They rarely get the required penetration.

I like this guys videos to illustrate. He probably has more, you'd have to search his page. And there are certainly others that do tests. But I've always liked his stuff. This is some for .380

These are merely data points and not the end all be all. But it is what it is.

Here's a simple test. It gets 13 inches so this may be an option. But cost is a factor. I'd personally run at least 100 rounds to check function.

Here in South Africa,  our criminals are rarely thicker than about six inches at the widest point :D

Well...here is the good old US of (fast food and McDonald's) A, our criminals can put on a lot more padding! (Especially during the winter with thick old coats). So, I concur, in that .380 FMJ is the way to go.
Here's a good read:

There's many more discussions on the web.
One addition/correction is in order...
Ace is dependability. (plus one for the CZ83)
Accuracy (IMHO) is KING. (plus another for the CZ83)
And the penetration is Queen. (that's my FMJ arguement)
Rounds that work well with the CZ83?
In my experience, the CZ83 handles just about anything...even Winchester White Box (WWB).
Fiocchi, S&B, Remington, Speer, Carbon, Hornady, factory reloads...no problems.
Buffalo Bore? I wish I could afford some. The 100gr flat nose hard cast would be my carry load. I have no doubt the CZ83 could handle it.
Congrat's on your CZ83 ... Penny for penny, the best purchase on today's market (include the CZ82).

Carry ammo is a very personal issue, just like which firearm to carry. When I drop underneath a .38 Special in power I go with FMJ. When I carry larger then I find the best JHP that I can find and afford. The bummer is, except for a few rounds to test feeding, I can't practice a whole lot with the expensive carry ammo. I use SB FMJ when I carry my CZ83, Wolf when I carry my CZ82 and Fiocchi when I carry my 7.65 Walther PP. All are European produced and loaded close to original specs which is important in my 7.65. The great thing is these brands are reasonably priced and I can practice with what I carry. Carry what you shoot well, shoot well what you carry.
