Cz 455 American Failure to Feed
« on: May 04, 2014, 10:23:02 PM »
Had my new CZ 455 American with .22lr barrel at the range today for the first time... out of the first 100 rounds had about 10 that did not feed properly. The round got jammed against the top of the barrel and had to be pushed down to feed before I could close the bolt. Any similar experiences or advice?

Do you have another magazine to try?

1-10 failing to feed is a lot  check mags for damage.- the 455 is basicly a .17 reciever ie it is designed for the longer round, to enable the shorter .22 round (and mag)  there is a plastic plug inserted in the action , this usually works very well, but check it is fitted correctly (nearly impossible for it not to be), ive seen one or two with the odd (very odd FTL as you describe). also some of the actions can be a little rough- tight when new, but they smooth out fairly quickly so until this happens try thumbing the rear of the bolt ie start the forward motion of the bolt with a STRAIGHT push from your thumb this stops any stuttering or squeing of the bolt resulting in a smooth feed. als ive noticed that some of the larger capacity mags when loaded fully the top round is under pressure and nearly jumps out of the mag causing the problem you described. do you have the 5 or 10 shots polymer or steel, is there any particular round FTF  first last ect, will it FTF with 1 round loaded.

I took my new CZ 455 American to the range today for the first time. I shot about 200 rounds of CCI standard velocity. Overall, I'm pretty disappointed. The bolt doesn't work as smoothly as other CZ's I've seen and the safety is VERY difficult to engage. In addition, I had several "failures to feed". It likely isn't due to the clip since it happened with all three that I tried (two 5 rd and one 10 rd).
In contrast, my little Marlin XT22YR (short youth model) that cost less than half as much feels smoother, shoots more accurately, and has never had a loading or ejecting failure.

I don't consider a firearm that needs work right out of the box to work properly to be a quality item. I'll contact CZ before I attempt any fixes.

Check your magazines. I had some similar problems with both 5 and 10 rounders, and in all cases it was the magazine. Either the spring was in backwards, or the follower was in backwards on the 10 rounder. There are good instructions around somewhere that describe the right way to put them together. It couldn't be easier, 5 minute fix.

I had the same problem with a 455 varmint.  I sent it back to the CZ dealer and they fixed it fine.  Offhand I can't remember exactly what they had to do to make it feed reliably but the top rim of the case would jam against the chamber.

The 455's design and also the 452 will only feed poorly due to a magazine issue (unless of course a mag well is cracked or something extreme).  The spring and follower are most likely installed wrong (backwards) in the magazine (just switch it around) or the mag is defective. Now the centerfires the feed can be tuned and some due require it.

Take your mag apart and make sure the follower is installed as per picture long and short leg placement are important.

Bottom mag is correct orientation

CZ is the only source I'm familiar with. They're plastic and work great.
