Glossy Blue - First Cleaning
« on: June 22, 2014, 02:29:18 AM »
I'm about to bring home a CZ 97b in glossy blue. My 75b SA was getting lonely and needed some company.

I'm a little nervous about upkeep on the glossy blue finish however, as I've read multiple posts online about the finish durability being especially susceptible to solvents, skin oils/acids and wear. I've only ever used FrogLube on my 75 and plan to do so on the 97 as well. FrogLube is a good option for me since I live in tight quarters with my wife who wouldn't appreciate the toxic odors of petroleum-based products filling our condo.

To remove the packing oil, I'm planning on using FrogLube Solvent before a heat treatment of FrogLube CLP. Does anyone have any experiences - positive or negative - specifically with FrogLube Solvent on this finish?

Thanks in advance.

Just Renaissance wax. Smells like shoe polish. I used to worry about the finish but learned to love to shoot the 97 enough that some wear just means we're having fun. Now the P06 is is competing for attention with the stainless 75B. I just need to shoot more often and not worry that it shows.

Thanks for the response.

I think my question was probably a little too specific. For anyone else that may be wondering, FrogLube Solvent and some cotton patches did a great job of removing the packing oil.

As for FrogLube itself, I'm not sure that it is working so well with the glossy finish, but we'll see. I don't trust it as a lubricant on the rails, but TW25B and FrogLube get along fine.

Just Renaissance wax.

Thanks for the tip on Renaissance Wax. FrogLube didn't really cut it on the glossy finish. Cleans things up fine, but it didn't really seem to maintain a nice finish. Do you use an oil-based cleaner before (re)applying wax? Or are you using Renaissance Wax as both a cleaner and protectant?

Clean with Ballistol. Lube with Militech using their pointed lubricant dispenser. Wipe down with dry tshirt rag then apply a little RennWax for storage. Shoot-Rinse-Repeat! I'll try froglube once the Militech runs out but they're much the same. After initial cleaning of factory lubes I toaster oven soaked the Militech for an hour at 140. After wiping that down I used RennWax while still warm. They seem compatible and RennWax doesn't show fingerprints as much. Good looks and hopefully good protection.

Blueing is an iron oxide.  It is imprevious to skin acids, skin oils, and solvents.  It, however, will not protect the steel against rust very well so make sure you wipe the gun well after touching it to avoid leaving perspiration (which contains salts) on the pistol.

FrogLube doesn't like being paired with petroleum-based products which I was surprised to see that Renaissance Wax is. I like FrogLube for most my other pistols, but the glossy CZ finish didn't seem to benefit.

nice photos, but the last photo does not appear to be a blue as the previous two, I can barely see a color difference. Is it my color blindness or the lighting? The first two appear very blue.

Admittedly the camera in my phone isn't the best for this purpose. I think I will reshoot with a better camera and lighting.

The first two were shot near a window and at an angle and the third top-down with my body blocking direct light from the window. This may account for the difference.

Also, my 97 is a 2013 model. There may be color differences between newer and older models as mine never looked as shiny blue as many pics on the Internet.
