What mods for PCR are recommended..
« on: August 28, 2014, 08:33:35 PM »
I think the trigger on my PCR can use a little work.  I see from this site that there are a couple of recommended shops to work with.  I'd like a lighter and smoother trigger, but if I'm sending it off, what else would you guys (who have had work done) suggest?

Thanks in advance.

Seriously...25 views and no one on this site has a comment?

Maybe I should have asked about a holster....

Patience Antem, I am sure you will get plenty of suggestions & ideas.

Unfortunately, I can't help because my CZ trigger is still bone stock.

Cajun Gun Works- Lighter main spring, polishing of internal components, lightened trigger return spring, lightened firing pin/firing pin block springs, and extended firing pin (for reliability of primer strikes even with the lightened mainspring) and the floating trigger pin.

If you want to really hit it home, get the SRS and 85C trigger, along with either Race hammer (CGW) or Comp Hammer (CZC)

CZ custom can also do all that, another great shop

If you are looking to only spend a few bucks but still want a nice trigger, get CGW's spring kit.

Spring change and a new hammer would be a good place to start.  Maybe a SRS.  A Reach Reduction Kit makes a big difference if you have shorter fingers.

I had CGW upgrade my PCR earlier this year.  David installed new firing pin with spring, firing pin block spring, trigger spring, 85C trigger, floating trigger pin, hammer spring, SRS2 disconnect, Ring Hammer and polished trigger bar, sear and lifter arm.  This lower trigger pull to 8lb for DA and 3.2lb for SA. Since then I have upgraded my RAMI BD and 75BD Police.  Also I have replace the firing pin, firing pin spring, firing pin block spring, firing pin retaining pin and hammer spring on my P09, P07 and 75B Omega.
Also you can search the forum for upgrades to PCR because several people have asked the same question.

I just got my PCR back from David at CGW. WOW! I had the full pro package done with night sights. My DA is at 7'10", SA 3'3". I am thrilled with his work and his customer service. I also have a Accu Shadow. The only difference I can find between the two triggers is a little more creep on SA. But never thought he would get the PCR even close never mind equal. Hats off to CGW.

My two cents from a novice shooter and novice home gunsmith.  Try these simple steps before you send off the pistol for extensive gunsmithing work.

1) Extensive dry fire. Use an O ring to protect the firing pin.
2) Replace stock (20#) mainspring with 15# Mainspring. This will reduce DA trigger pull significantly. Cost is about $10; so simple a caveman can do it.
OR
3) If the 15# mainspring doesn't reduce the DA pull enough get the Ultra-light/SD kit from Cajun Gunworks. Cost is about $50.
This kit has 11.5# and 13# mainsprings, an extended firing pin, firing pin spring and firing pin block spring.  You will need a correctly sized punch to install the new firing pin and associated springs.

This is a s far as I went.

I guess the next step would be a replacement hammer to make the single action more crisp.  I'm not sure whether this is a difficult job for a novice home gunsmith.

I think you need to think about what use the PCR is put to.  I don't compete, so I tend to discount the need for a finely tuned trigger.  As they say, "your mileage may vary".  Also, I have never heard any complaints about the work done by CGW or CZC, so if you go that direction you WILL be satisfied.
Good judgement comes from experience.
Experience comes from bad judgement.

If I sent the pistol off to have a hammer and tune done to it I would also suggest looking into...

  • SRS(Short Reset System) - get rid of the creep/take up in SA
  • Sights - Do you want low light? Or better sights?
  • Grips - I was not a fan of the OE rubber grips
  • RRK(Reach Reduction Kit) - No personal experience with this one but I know it is popular
  • Steel guide rod - Some have swapped the plastic guide rod with a steel version

I have added an SRS to my P-01 and PCR Pro-Tek and thoroughly enjoy the change it made.  When it comes to shops CZC did an amazing job on the P-01 with their hammer and tune which lead to a night and day difference.   I was especially surprised by the change in de-cocking, as it went from heavy and gritty to smooth and crisp.   While I have not sent work to CGW I have ordered a few hundred in parts and they are fantastic.

I used the CGW short reset system (SRS-1) and the type 2 disconnector on my PCR. It comes with the reduced weight FPB lifter spring, extended firing pin and spring, lighter mainspring, and FPB lifter, if I recall correctly. If I could only add one more thing it would be the CGW decocker race hammer. The pull itself is about 3-4 lbs SA and 8-9 lbs DA now last time I used a pull gauge, without the race hammer. I imagine the upgraded hammer would make the break more crisp, but can't say for sure as I've never shot a gun with it installed.

1.  I woukld assume that if you 'go too low' in the weight of the mainspring, you will increase either slidestop wear or frame wear, or both - right?

2.  How hard is this work to do on your own given the complexity of the decocker?

1. Light mainspring hasn't increased wear in my SP01. 7k rounds so far.

2. If you use the "slave pin" from CGW to keep the sear cage together when you pull it out, the work is very easy. But, if you want the SRS then you will have to disassemble and reassemble the sear cage. If it's your first time working on the gun, I would say do everything except the SRS, so that you don't have to deal with the sear cage yet.

For working on my Rami BD, this Armorers manual for the PCR from CZ USA , helped me a lot. Along with the many threads such as
http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?p=7564021&posted=1
And videos from tdogg
http://www.czfirearms.us/index.php?topic=62123.msg410719#msg410719
These really helped me when working with the decocker.

+ 1 on the slave pin. I was lucky enough to install the SRS without completely pulling the sear cage apart just by using the slave pin.

If you decide to tackle the sear cage I would also recommend ordering some extra  lifter arm springs. They are easy to lose and don't cost much so it's better to have them than not. I know from experience.
