Finally joined the AR15/M4 Club :-)
« on: October 01, 2014, 05:42:29 PM »
So this happened earlier today   8)  8)  8)

Dressed her with an Aimpoint Patrol Rifle Optic.  I have about 100 rounds of Federal American Eagle 62gr FMJ through her, and so far so good.  She shoots straight.  Very happy.

Should have mentioned in the first post:

This is a Daniel Defense V11 with an 18" 5.56 1:7 barrel.  The contour is a Daniel Defense proprietary that they call S2W, which stands for "Strength to Weight".   Like all Daniel defense barrels, this one is cold hammer forged.  However, whereas all other Daniel Defense barrels are chrome-lined, their 18" S2W barrel is melonite finished.  The forearm grip is keymod, which among other things, allows for a narrower grip than the standard quad rails.  And I think that covers the basic specs.

Again, very happy.   ;)

Nice!

How do you like the stock?  I love the looks of it and was thinking of using it in a lighter weight build.

What're you going to use it for?  3gun, sage rats, range toy?
Don't mistake my high post count for knowledge or wisdom.   I just like hearing myself type.

More specs:

The gas block is rifle length.
That S2W barrel profile is supposed to be the best combination of rigidity and weight, beefy in the rear, but narrower toward the front.  A picture of the profile:

The stock trigger breaks at 7lbs 9oz.  It feels better than my buddy's M&P's stock trigger, but not by much.  I suspect it's on the nice side of typical.  Despite the heavy break, I don't mind the trigger, but I will replace it as soon as I decide to go with a more typical 2-stage Geissele or their gamer S3G or SD3G.

I can't claim to have enough time behind M4's to give credible opinions on stocks, but I can tell you a few things.  It's comfortable.  I would imagine that the little rubber "cheek weld plate" (don't know what DD calls it) works to some degree to give you a better cheek weld, but I don't actually notice it's there.  Just to be sure you know what I'm referencing:

The other thing I would note is that the release to expand or collapse it is easy to manipulate.  I fiddled with it to see how it worked, then I expanded and collapsed it several times without looking at what I was doing, and now I can find it and actuate it without looking.  And it's out of the way in a way that I don't see actuating it by accident.  So fairly good from my limited perspective.

AND it looks sharp.   8)  The gun store where I bought it has 100+ M4s on the wall, and that stock makes the Daniel Defense rifles stand out from the others.

Another option -- I know from my reading that a lot of the 3-Gun guys looking to reduce weight use the ACE skeletal stock (non-collapsible), so you might want to check out that one, too.

All of the above?  ;)

Smitty, I am going to outfit it for 3-Gun, and once I have the experience to know what I want different, I'll start building a dedicated 3-Gun rifle and return this one to general purpose status.

Truth be told, I bought the Aimpoint because I haven't decided yet what 1-4 gamer scope I want, and I didn't want to risk buying a scope I would be unsatisfied with and want to replace immediately when I could buy an Aimpoint that I would have a use for otherwise when I get the scope I want.  Unfortunately, I realized 5 minutes into my first bit of range time with the rifle that I was going to need a magnified optic sooner than later if I wanted to squeeze as much accuracy as possible out of load development, so I need to either figure out what gamer scope I want in a hurry, or I need to get a picatinny mount for one of my 1" tubes.
