Least common caliber: 9 mm PA Rubber
« on: October 23, 2014, 10:10:30 PM »
The question of CZ83 calibers has come up a number of times, so I've known that there was a non-lethal version for some time now, but never really knew anything about it beyond what is in the chart on page 12 of the manual. Now I know more, since I found:

ANALYSIS OF POSSIBILITIES OF MISUSE OF THE WEAPON SYSTEM CZ 83 PA RUBBER

This is an academic journal paper from Advances in Military Technology discussing "The pistol CZ 83 of calibre 9 mm PA Rubber is a single purpose semi-automatic handgun firing rubber non-lethal spherical projectiles."  The main point seems to be a discussion of how the design is intended to safely prevent the use of standard, metallic projectiles in the non-lethal version - and CZ's design for it is pretty interesting to me.

The 9mm PA Rubber version WILL set off a .380/9 mm Browning court round, but is designed to literally catch the bullet in the forcing cone. The gas pressure then intentionally ruptures the case at a discharge hole machined into the chamber, and the pressure is vented.

(on the left cartridge before firing, on the right fired cartridge case with a circular hole in its body and two deformed projectiles after their extraction from the barrel)

The paper goes on to provide various equations, pressure curves and some fancy-pants finite element work that is only appropriate for the engineers and scientists in the room.

My main thoughts are simply:  It's interesting to know more about the 82/83 than I knew before, and that it's fun to see more evidence of the skill of the Czech designers and manufacturers.  Hope you find something interesting here, and I'd love to hear if any of you know more about this stuff, or if you notice something important in the paper that I may have glossed over.

Pretty neat!

I too, now know just a smidgen more about one of my favorite pistol designs.  I saved that .PDF file, to what end, I am not sure, but it was a very interesting read.

Thanks for sharing the link, CC -

Quick update - I double checked the link earlier and wasn't able to get through.  Here's another link that gives access to the full paper if the old link stays broken:
