Canik Stingray-C sights
« on: November 14, 2014, 03:37:14 AM »
So, I ordered a new sight set from CGW and of course it seems it doesn't fit my type of fixed sights.  From what I have been reading about the Stingray is that there are multiple sight combos.

Version 1 - short front/too tall fixed rear/large dovetail that shoots high

Version 2 - large dovetail/adjustable sight that shoots fine so I'm assuming the front sight is appropriately sized for the adjustable sight and seems to shoot POA

Version 3 - fixed rear/small dovetail that also shoots high.

Now, I've been measuring my sights (version 1).  The front is 5mm overall height from top to the bottom of the dovetail.  3mm of that is the actual height of the blade.  The top of the rear sight is actually 7mm above the highest part of the slide so that would be the height of the rear blades.  That seems like a pretty large difference to me for a gun with such a low profile slide.  It would  be nice to hear from other what their sight measurements are for the other two versions.  Figuring out what the sight differences are between the different guns might shed some light on how to correct the shooting high problems.

The CGW sight set is set-up for version 3 as far as I can tell.  The CGW rear sight blades looks to be about 6mm above the highest part of the slide.  The CGW front blade is 5mm overall height and 3mm above the slide. A difference of 2mm.  The sight is actually marked as .125T (3.18mm) and is made by Dawson.  That measurement is in inches and doesn't include the dovetail height.  It seems to be how they are measuring the height of their sights as opposed to the CZ way of using the whole height including the dovetail.  Dawson also makes the same sight in .140 (3.56mm), .150 (3.81mm), .170 (4.32mm), .185 (4.7mm), .195 (4.95mm), .215 (5.46mm), .230 (5.84mm), .240 (6.10mm).

From DexterGSP's experience with replacing the rear sight with the adjustable sight, he said that the fixed sight on the lowest setting is .04" (1.02mm) to .045" (1.14mm) shorter than the fixed rear/large dovetail sight.  Taken from this post http://www.czfirearms.us/index.php?topic=63353.30

That pretty much brings the CGW works kit for version 3 and DexterGSP's version 1 numbers pretty close.  So what's my point you may be asking?  Well would it make sense then if you swapped the front for the Dawson .170 (4.32mm) sight, that things would be pretty much fixed?  I know that it has been said that the front sight shouldn't be messed with due to the barrel bushing, but the barrel bushing on mine doesn't seem to be in the way of getting the sight out.  Since I'm thinking of maybe using this gun for some IDPA matches, I'd prefer to have a fixed rear sight.  Less things to come apart or accidentally change in competition.

Am I totally off base?

I wish I could help.  I have a Stingray-C that I bought that was supposed to be the adjustable rear and chrome barrel. It came with a blued barrel and fixed rear.
My front sight is also removable without touching the barrel bushing.  It seems there is no 100% answer on these Caniks due to the change in sights the factory did.
I pretty much have given up on doing anything to mine and just put it to the back of the safe in hopes time will pass and this mess will be figured out.  The only issue
the Caniks all seem to have all fall in the sight problems everybody is encountering.  Why couldn't Canik just copy a CZ75 dovetail and be done with it?

Well I still haven't gotten the sights fixed but my new grips came in...

Never been a fan of hard plastic grips.  I do like the rubber CZ grips better even though I only have a medium sized hand.  There wasn't any cutting or fitting required.

Appearance wise those plastic grips have improved, since I got my Stingray.  Function wise I agree, CZ rubber or VZ grips are probably better.

I want to use my stingray for IDPA as well. Since the rear sight replacement seems like a PITA, don't know have not seen a picture.

I was going to order either a Front FO or a Night Sight from CZ Customs that is a wee bit taller than the stock one since it shoots 1" high at 7 yards.

As far as the mods go, I was able to make my DA/SA about 5/3 lbs with the following parts.

CZ Customs Extended firing pin ground down to .0001 thinner than the stock FP and then lengthened the slot for the crosspin.
CGW Firing Pin Spring
CGW 8.5 lb Hammer Spring
CGW Canik Trigger Pin
CGW trigger return Spring
CGW Disconnector for Firing Pin Block CZ's

I also used and fitted the stock CZ75 Magazine release since it is a wee bit longer and rubber grips from a CZ75.

I also did some carefull filing and stoning of the hammer and sear to get the trigger pull that I have.

All in all it was a fun project on a Glock Budget. The Stingray was accurate in stock form, I can't wait to see how it is now.

Well you will have to let us know how changing the front sight works and what size you end up going with.

After a very long wait...like a 3 month wait, Century finally came through with sending me the adjustable rear sight for my Stingray (large dovetail version 3 from my description above).  Got the new sight installed, but I have yet to get it to the range to check to see if it's still shooting high.  From my initial impressions, it lines up much better now with the front sight.  I no longer see the top of the slide when the sights are properly aligned and all of the dots line up as they should.  Can't wait to test it out.  Still need to install the fiber optic front sight from CGW though.
