A list of questions from a new guy
« on: May 22, 2006, 11:49:59 AM »
Please bear with me, I'm not necessarily new to shooting, but I am new to having any gunsmithing work done, changing recoil springs, etc.
I shoot, clean, reload and repeat again and again.

I mostly shoot either a Dan Wesson .357 revolver (70s/80s Dan Wesson) or a Ruger MK 2 .22.   I have on occasion shot about 200 rounds through a TA-90, which is a rough copy of the CZ 75 as far as I know.

Now for the list of questions, being a lefty, is the magazine release on the SP-01 reversible or am I just going to need to keep using my shooting finger to release the mag?

This is one I should know, but the exact answer keeps eluding me, is the SP-01 18+1, or 19+1?

Are all of the internal parts identical to the CZ-75, replacement firing pins, springs, extractors etc just standard CZ 75 parts?

Are the only differences between the regular 01 and the Tactical model the decocker/saftey now that the night sights are equipped on both?

When Angus produces a Shadow model, does he take a regular SP-01 off the shelf and make all of the changes, or are certain SP-01s made with the Shadow in mind?

Does Angus personally use the fiber sight or the competition heigth sight?

When using skate tape to improve the grip, do you guys put tape up the whole front and backstrap, or just at certain pressure points?

Where in the world can I find one of those tactical mounts/bayonets??!

And now just a couple of reloading questions,  do any of you use non-FMJ, lead bullets in your 9mm loadings?  I remember hearing that they are a bad idea in polygonal barrels (HK etc.) but I also heard once that they are a bad idea in rounds that aren't sub-sonic.  I use Zero (or Roze..) lead bullets in my .38 loadings with no problems, but these are light target loads well below 1000 fps.

Also has anyone ever tried the 9mm bullets from www.precisionbullets.com/   or has anyone heard of their quality?

I apologize for the long list, but if you could answer just one or more of these questions I would be greatful.

*All my 7 magazines holds 19rds.

*The only difference from regular SP01 and SP01 Tactical, as far as I know, is the safety vs. decocking.

*Skateboard tape. It differs from shooter to shooter how one uses it. Ive seen folks applying it on pressure points and Ive seen folks using it on all over. If You are shooting in Production in IPSC theres rules to follow...

*Theres a thread here on "Where to buy tactical block", look into that one.

As a lefty myself who shoots a LOT, I will take the mag question...

I actually PREFER the safety right where it is, on the left side of the gun.  I have become very accustomed and I am most comfortable doing reloads with my trigger finger.  I have had some of the "reverse" mag releases on my 1911's  and I have always gone back to the original design.  My experience is that there is less fumbling with my grip as my index finger is a lot longer than my thumb and I do not have to "roll" the gun in my hand to get my thumb on the mag release and then have to shift the gun back to get my grip.

That's just me, anyway!

From talking with Angus, the Shadow will not be in the US until 2007 and then have to wait the 1 year and 500 (or 2000) units for it to be USPSA legal.

I believe the ones Angus has now are regular SP01's that Angus has done the work to (trigger, sights, etc) like a Shadow will be. The feeling I got from Angus, they are just as good and maybe better than what the Shadow will be.

I have grip tape on the front strap, grips only and love it. I have only put 12 rounds max in the mags I have in practice, b/c I shoot USPSA Prod and can only put 10 rounds in the mag.

I forgot to mention in my original post that I'm not yet interested in any competitive shooting, most of the shooting I do is at a local wildlife club that has 25 and 50 yard steel silhouette ranges.
But the possibility of being able to use the pistol for competitive shooting in the future isn't out of the question.

I also read on the forum that Fobus Glock 21 (or 22, can't remember offhand) holsters fit the SP-01 fairly well, I would just need something while I am setting up targets etc not to leave the gun unattended.  Could anyone tell me which model number it is that fits the SP-01?

Thanks for the replies, now if I could just find one of these in a gunshop..hopefully someone will have some at the next big gun show in July.

The paddle model is the GL3. Paddles are a friction fit design. That is, they so not have the belt threaded through the holster. The belt holster, which I have, is the GL3BH.

I have the through the belt type and it does work, but I am going to get a different holster.  Since I'm holstering more, I don't want my SP-01 finish to wear due to the holster not being 100% for the gun.  The fobus hits the slide release and on the belt version can't be trimmed down due to the belt loop mounts to the holster.
