SAR K2 with 8lb DA
« on: January 17, 2015, 06:52:24 PM »
This is just an FYI guys.

I was looking to lower the DA pull on my K2 and ordered a 3-pack of Wolff hammer springs for the Witness. They come in 13, 14, and 15lb rates and fit the K2 perfectly. I went for broke and started with the 13lb and ended up with an 8lb DA and 4lb SA. The felt difference in the DA was, well, orgasmic. :)

All I have on hand is a bulk pack of UMC ammo and it's pouring down rain right now so I hunkered under the eves of my workshed and fired off 10 rounds - no FTfires! I know, 10 rounds of unknown primers doesn't mean much but it's giving me hope.

I contacted EEA last week and asked for information about the spring rates for the K2 and the gal said she'd have their repair guy call me...I didn't expect much so I wasn't disappointed when no one called back. So, I don't know what rate of hammer spring the OEM is, and consequently, how much of a reduction the 13lb Wolff is. All I know is it sure feels good and seems to pop Remington primers okay. The strike on the primers looks about the same as the original hammer spring for what that's worth. Doing the pencil test, the OEM spring would push the pencil to the ceiling and the Wolff spring was about 18 inches lower. Again, FWIW.

EEA also didn't want to sell me parts but wanted me to send the gun in, even though I told them there's nothing wrong with the gun - they really seemed to want to avoid the part purchasing thing. Maybe they don't have a stock of them yet, I don't know. If I can buy a few firing pin springs I might play around with snipping a few coils if the 13lb Wolff doesn't want to work with other ammo.

Anyway, just thought you K2 owners might get something useful from this.

If you want info like that on SAR guns, contact Brian Ahearn on this forum.   He's the guru.

Thanks Smitty. I hate to bug Brian; I know he's busy. I'm gonna email Sarsilmaz too. They might be open to talking to us 'Mericun customers. :)

I had a 13 pound hammer spring in a steel Tanfo and had misfires from time to time (stock firing pin and spring).  Switched up to 14 pound hammer spring and never a mis-fire since.

Another thing about Brian.   He has extended firing pins for SAR K2 45s.

Wolff's page says 16lb is standard for the short Tanfoglio springs. Seems like I've heard claims of up to 18lb for stock springs, but that may just be people confusing the old (long) springs and the newer style (short) springs. 18-20 lbs is a lot more common for a full-size 'CZ style' spring.

I'm surprised 13lb only got the trigger pull down to 4/8. I have a Witness compact with a stock hammer spring that is lower than that (well, the SA is; DA is similar).

Well, it is a SAR and not a Tanfo or Witness, so it's hard to say if they made changes that didn't follow suit with the other two. That's why it'd be nice to hear from the factory.

I checked the difference in wire diameter for the 14 and 15 lb springs from Wolff and there's a difference of .001. The difference between the factory spring and the 15lb Wolff spring is slightly more than .003. Extrapolating that out could mean an 18lb for the OEM spring...still a WAG though.

I'll take the 4/8 any day over 5/12. :)

So that would be these?

Quote
Hammer Spring Pak: Reduced Power - For Use In: Newer Short Transverse Hammer Spring models
This hammer spring pak contains 1 each of 13, 14 and 15 pound reduced power hammer springs described above. (Stock No. 26507)

I have a SAR K2P that sits in the safe because the DA is so heavy. Been trying to find time to tune it and that would be a nice start.
