range comparison: my CZ 75 B and my new Glock 17
« on: May 15, 2015, 02:25:08 PM »
Gentlemen,

The local gun store had Glock 17s on sale and, after postponing it for 30 years, I finally bought a Glock. Now that I have one, I don't see what all the fuss is about: my CZ 75B is a better pistol.

In my hands, the CZ is more accurate. Maybe part of that is because the CZ is more stable in my hands, due to its weight, but, whatever the reason, I shoot it more accurately.

When it comes to reliability, there is no contest: the CZ wins. That's because the Glock's reliability  is contingent upon my grip. The Glock is plenty reliable IF I HOLD IT RIGHT. The CZ is reliable no matter how I hold it.

I'll be the first to admit that I am a "limp wrister." That's because I shoot revolvers mainly, and I hold them in a relaxed grip. When I shoot single action revolvers, I relax my grip and allow the handle to slide down my palm during recoil. Try that with a polymer semi-auto like the Glock 17 and you'll probably have a number of malfunctions (I sure did). But my CZ, no doubt because of its increased weight, shoots reliably without worrying about my grip.

The Trigger: CZ wins. I like the long pull of the first double action shot. I think it's safer, and I can stage it a bit, which gives me more control. The single action pull on the CZ actually feels a bit lighter to me than the Glock's DA pull, and that may also explain its better accuracy (in my hands).

There are two things I actually like better about the Glock: 1) the sights. I may be in a minority, but I've never liked 3 dot sights, and the Glock seems to come on target a little faster than my CZ; and 2) the ejection. the brass from my Glock falls within a neat circle around my feet--making it a lot easier to pick up---while the CZ throws them out much farther (both guns shooting 115 grain FMJ).

Overall, I'm glad I have the Glock; it's a great range gun---and that means less wear and tear on the gun I would actually carry: my CZ 75 B.

Those are interesting observations.  My neighbor has maybe 12 Glocks and I have none.  I've shot his and the grip angle is not right for me and the grip shape is too rectangular.  I love the more ovalized shape of the steel CZ's.

Glocks are the small block Chevy of the pistol world.  You can make them in to anything you want.  Everyone has one.  From a manufacturing and utility standpoint, I suppose they are good.  Just not for me.

I'm a DOHC Ford guy myself.  I'll stick with the CZ's, both steel and polymer.

Glocks are for carry, CZs for the range, home defense. The only gun that comes close to my CZs in accuracy, is my FNS9, very nice plastic pistol ;)

I completely agree. Although my Glock is shooting better now than it did when new (after 350 rounds and 200 dry-fires), my SR1911, CZ75B? and CZ75 Compact are more accurate in my hands. (First trip to the range, the Glock 41 was outshot by an LCP)

I'm a CZ loyalist, and I agree with most of your points, but that's just me.  Everybody's got different preferences, and it's no more correct to say CZs are better than to say Glocks are. Ergonomics are subjective, and that has such a huge impact on how we shoot that no two people will feel exactly alike about guns.

As you say, you're a revolver guy who likes a good DA pull (and steel, I would imagine). I'm rapidly turning into the same (I've always preferred steel, but revolvers are my new true love...), but I completely understand the appeal of those short, light striker triggers. It's not for me, but it doesn't have to be.

I have been comparing my 75B with my SIG 2022. On dry-firing I have notice a huge difference in feel as the hammer goes down. On my 75B the only real sensation is the sharp sound of metal hitting metal. On my 2022 the hammer falls and you can feel the reverberation all the way through the grip as the hammer hits the firing pin and effectively bounces back off of the firing pin. It really is a remarkably different sensation.

I owned one GLOCK my entire life and have no desire to own another.

It's funny after decades of polymer guns, steel will never go away.

I carry what I shoot best.  Second best might not get me home.  We carry to protect our lives and our loved ones.  Why would you use anything but your best for that?  Makes no sense to me.  I exclusively own and carry CZs.

I've sold all my Glocks except 1 and I could be easily persuaded to sell that one also. Used the proceeds to buy real pistols, CZ's and Sigs.... oops just remembered, I sold a Sig to buy another CZ. Guess I like CZ's better than any other! ;)

I've only ever rented a glock (17)--really didn't like it, felt like it was going to fall apart, though maybe that's because it was a heavily used range gun.  Actually shot pretty well with it, but not my thing.  I've yet to find a polymer striker that really felt 'right' to me (XDm's, M&P's)--had hopes up for PPQ, nicer trigger but meh--I don't have any omegas yet but think that's where I'll head for polymer--just too used to DA/SA hammer.  Like everyone else has said, I guess you like what you've become used to (and good at).

I haven't tried sig 226/9's, they're pretty proud ($), but suppose will get around to it.  .40 tac-ops maybe?

My first gun was a Glock 17 Gen. 1. I couldn?t hit a barn from the inside compared to the rattling CZ 75 pre-B (tropical version, so large tolerances and painted). Despite the crazy rattling of the CZ, it was like coming home: grip angle fit, trigger was way better ...
After a long break in shooting I?m back to CZ and now own a Shadow. Great gun and a keeper for sure! Got me a RIA 1911 Tactical single stack in .45 - great gun as well with the right ammo. Tried Glocks repeatedly: Might be reliable and better for carry (which I don?t), but those tupperware-guns are simply not for me.

IMHO, everyone should shoot, drive, eat, etc. what they like.  While I enjoy reading/hearing what others like and why, I do not appreciate the aggressive "fan boys" of any manufacturer (Glock, Colt, Sig, CZ and others) who are not happy until they have repeatedly told you why theirs is best and yours is crap  ::) .   With that said, I've yet to have a "tupperware toter" try out my SS 75b who hasn't been impressed  ;) .
