15 lbs. hammer spring disappointment
« on: June 04, 2015, 09:38:34 AM »
My 75b trigger is crisp and smooth, but DA coms in at 13 lbs and SA at 7 lbs. I replaced the hammer spring with a Wolff reduced power 15 lbs. spring hoping for some improvement . It only dropped it 1 lbs. in DA and just under 1 lbs. in SA.  The stock spring was 20 lbs, so a 5 lbs. drop only dropped the pull 1 lbs. Would a 13 lbs. even make a difference going from 15 lbs. ? Does the reduced firing pin block spring from CGW make much difference ? What's the best I could hope for without swapping out hammers or sears ? -Thanks

Trying a lighter hammer spring is a fairly cheap experiment.  My SP-01 Shadow originally came with a 13 lb hammer spring from CZC.  It also had the extended firing pin and reduced firing pin spring installed.  IIRC the original DA pull was a hair under 8 lbs.  After several thousand trigger pulls it dropped to about 7 3/4 lbs.

I changed out the 13 lb spring for an 11.5 lb and the DA pull dropped to mid 6's.  Then again mine has been internally polished and has the CZC Shadow/Comp Hammer -but my understanding it the hammer mainly affects the feel of the SA pull.  Give the lighter springs a try, though recommend if you drop into the 11-13 lb range you also get the extended firing pin and reduced firing pin spring.  CZC or CGW sells them (~$25 I think).  I shoot CCI primers and they all go off with the lighter spring/firing pin combo.

There's also the issue of using different types of springs.  There's no industry standard for how to measure springs, so a fifteen pound spring from Wolff and a fifteen pound spring from someone like CGW won't behave the same way.  They may be close or not.  David at CGW has done a lot to produce a wide variety of high quality springs, and when I want to respring my CZs, that's where I go.

Go down at least as far as 13 and start thinking about replacing the hammer.  Polishing up the internals will help some, too.  ;)

FWIW, I bought the CGW spring kit (SPGK1) below for my 75B Omega and saw a marked drop of DA trigger pull weight.  Although it never claimed to reduce SA trigger pull, I also saw an improvement in SA.

Here are my before and after readings:

Before:
DA = 11.5lbs
SA = 4.5 lbs

After (SPGK1 + polished the trigger bar as well as the DA roller):
DA = 8 lbs
SA = 3 lbs

Did you use the stock firing pin ? Any issues with light strikes ?

Yes, I'm still using the stock firing pin.  Initially, I was concerned that I may need the extended firing pin, so I wrote to David from CGW who assured me it'll be fine.

Although I use almost exclusively Freedom Munitions ammo (remanufactured and new, 115gr/124gr/147gr, RN/JHP/XTP), I have shot some factory ammo I got from Walmart and LGS (Federal, PPU, Remington, Winchester, CCI).  No issues in performance whatsoever while using the SPGK1 spring kit.  Every ammo ignited.
