Safely Decocking CZ-83?
« on: July 09, 2015, 10:43:52 PM »
Does anyone have any tips or tricks for safely decocking the CZ-83? Or is it just a matter of practice?

Thanks

Another more explosive question, has anyone had an accidental discharge while attempting to decock a CZ-83? :o  How often does it occur?

Thanks

Place your left thumb firmly between the hammer and firing pin. Squeeze the trigger until you feel the hammer release. Release the trigger and slowly slide your thumb up and out, allowing the hammer to slide safely into the decocked position. This is how I decock my CZ-82, the 83 should be no different. Unless the trigger is depressed the hammer will not move forward far enough to strike the firing pin.

I'll try that out.

The CZ-83 does not have a "half-cocked" position, does it?

Thanks

NEVER should be the correct answer
When did it change from "We the people" to "screw the people"?

Why use 911 when it's faster to use 1911 or 9mm?

Never is the answer I was hoping to hear. I just didn't know if decocking was a tricky proposition that could easily be botched even when performed with care.

Thanks

Anything can be botched. Practice the method I described above with an empty chamber until you are comfortable with it. It's really much safer than the Hollywood method of thumbing the hammer while pulling the trigger all with the same hand. That's a recipe for an ND.

Practice, pay attention and point it in a safe direction. websterz gave a good description of the process. I do this all the time with my CZ82, although I do usually do it with one hand.

OK, nobody else will admit to it... I had a ND doing exactly this. The gun was pointed safely downrange (the safety rules are designed very elegantly to make sure you have to make TWO mistakes before anybody gets hurt), and I'll just say the slide ripping the skin off your thumb is about as good a wake-up as you can get without a 911 call.

I did it practicing too fast repeated drawing and firing, then dropping hammer.  It bruised my thumb that's all.  Go slowly and it won't happen.

Maybe the method I learned in the military. Bit more of a pita but.........  pinch hammer between thumb and 3rd finger with index finger in the way of the hammer.  Rest is the same, pull and release trigger before letting the hammer down.  Worst case is dropping the hammer on your index finger.

I rotate the guns (CZ 75s) to the left and pinch the hammer between the thumb and second knuckle of the weak hand,  pull the trigger and start to lower the hammer, release the trigger and ease the hammer fully down.
In comp. there may a tendency to do this fast.  BAD call,  go slooow and it's perfectly safe.

Webstersz - I think this is basically what you wrote.  Rolling "Slavex"....you might have already seen this one. Note that a heavier mainspring will pinch in with some bite on the thumb while rolling it out of the way. Definitely not something to rush... http://youtu.be/YpcHRoL35Po

I do it the exact same way.
