Something Ugly followed me home today........
« on: July 31, 2015, 01:01:35 AM »
I don't think I have said that since college....... ;)

The CZ bug bit again, so I stopped by my LGS this afternoon and picked up the latest antidote to help get over the infection.

As I was filling out my paperwork, my guy was looking the gun over and said "I have never known you to buy anything in this bad of shape.  It is going to need some TLC to get it to where you will be happy with it."  And I said "Yep, everyone needs a project.  But, it's a CZ, what's not to like."

Picked up a CZ 75D today.  1999 model.  Israeli police surplus trade in.  What I think is kind of neat about it is that it is a steel framed gun, not an alloy frame like the current model CZ 75D's.

The frame has plenty of holster wear and scratches, but the action feels good and smooth.  Mainspring plug pin has a lanyard loop, which is gonna go so I can replace the old grips with a set of CZ factory rubber I have sitting here.  The dots on the sights are almost non-exsitent, but will get cleaned up and probably a dot of paint or polish applied.  Already replaced the deformed rubber mag bottom with a new one this evening.

Besides the mainspring plug pin, I am going to replace the recoil spring.  What else do you guys recommend I need to do to it besides giving it a good break down and cleaning. (Unless I run it like JoeL and leave it dirty ;))

I bought this to use as my "go-to" gun here on the farm when I am on the tractor.  It can also work for a truck gun or something to have around the shop.  Something that could take a little more abuse than I would want to give any of my other CZ's.

Well,  it's not college age Coyote Ugly. :)
It sounds like a good plan to me.

While cleaning and lubing I'd check the extractor and F.P. and then go shoot it a little---then a lot.
Let us know how it goes.

Nice Project Pistol!  8)

I would also replace the Extractor and Firing Pin Springs.
Replace the Main/Hammer Spring only if you get light strikes on primers.

I had thought about those springs too, but was going to take it for a test drive first.  The only thing that really bothers me right now is the lanyard ring.  It is keeping me from changing grips.  And the factory grips that are on it make it the fattest feeling CZ I have ever handled.  I am either going to order me a new pin or dremel the one I have so I can swap grips.

Don't know if I will be able to wait for a new pin to arrive............now where did I put that cut off wheel at.............

Pick up a #32 drill, or a 3mm drill if you can find one, and use the cutoff wheel on the chuck end of it. That will save the original pin in case you want to restore the pistol to "as purchased" condition.

Depending on what the price tag was, I probably would have bought this too. Not ugly, just "experienced".

Could not find either of those bits at the local Ace Hardware.  But did get a 7/64 bit.  Hair smaller diameter, but it made the sacrifice and is now sitting in the CZ. ;D

Cleaned it up this evening, but did not get a chance to shoot it.  Installed rubber grips and new grip screws.  Also had a touch up blueing pen and hit all the shiny, exposed metal areas.  Not a perfect match, but I think it looks a little better than it did.

Someone had painted the dots on the sights at one time......and I think they must have used a 2" trim brush to do it.  After I got all the crude cleaned off, I could see the dots better, but had to remove white paint from everything that wasn't a dot.  Enough paint on there to cover about a dozen dots.  Still not happy with the sights, but time will tell.

I compared the grip on the 75D with my PCR.  The 75D feels more like I am holding a 75B than my PCR.  I thought it was the steel frame and weight difference, but after swapping back and forth, it's all in the beaver tail.  The tail is different on the 75D than on my PCR.  I prefer the feel of the PCR tail.  If I ever decide to refinish the frame, I think I will modify the tail on the 75D some to resemble the PCR tail.  Maybe not.......again, time will tell.
