https://youtu.be/xaokbhNgAfIShot my first match with the red dot yesterday at Boston Urban action shooters. Overall I am very impressed. I had been dryfiring a bit and picking up the dot was pretty natural as long as my grip technique was good. I currently have the sight mounted on a rear sight dovetail adapter. This puts it approx 3/8" of an inch higher than it will be when I send it off to be milled into the slide.
My first stage I didn't get any video of but it was a 31 round field course that had the opportunity to reengage the same target from multiple locations. I shot at a bit of a slower pace to ensure good hits and tried to do everything else quickly. I didn't call any misses and only dropped 3 points. It's a definite adjustment to focus on the targets and not the sights, done properly with both eyes open I am not even aware of the sight just the dot on the target, much like shooting a gun with a laser attached.
I did find that during this stage that I was concentrating so much on the sight and the dot that I lost focus on some of the fundamentals of grip and reloads were not stellar. A definite learning curve.
On the second stage you were moving from box to box, while carrying a kettle bell, 4 to each target, ranges from 40' down to about 10'. This went a bit better and I got the feel of adding a bit more speed, accuracy was good except a close target from 20' that I didn't call a hit dropped into the black of a bottom half hard cover target. I was not far into the hard cover but I didn't call the miss, so I didn't fire a make up shot.
Third stage was the Zebra Stripes. I slowed right down for this. Plenty of people had misses on this because the bullet landed wholly within the tape. I picked my aim point on each target and the bullets went exactly where they were fired. I had a slow time but had no misses.
Last was the classifier 99-23 Front Sight. Which as many of you know has a ridiculously high hit factor. I wanted a clean turn and draw and all of the hits. I pushed a little bit and dropped a few points but was happy for my first outing.
I am going to dryfire every day, and really work the fundamentals. I have to adjust to holding the gun a bit lower to pick up the dot. I will definitely be shooting Carry Optics from here on, with my worsening Astigmatism, I think that a target focus is going to change my game dramatically. I hope that there is enough interest in the division to make it worth shooting at Area 7. I am getting an order of 135 gr HP plated bullets this week to try out. And an order of 147 gr bullets in the near future, on the recommendation of Craig Phillips.
In the Spring I plan to have a threaded barrel and SJC comp and may try my hand at Open division. Any and all feedback is welcome.
