Went to Wally-world and bought ...
« on: July 18, 2002, 10:27:59 PM »
Went to the local Wally-world tonight to buy some socks and Copenhangen and ended up getting some 95 grain Remington UMC and Winchester White Box .380 rounds for my spankin' new CZ-83 which I haven't fired yet.  I plan on buying some fancier and heavier ammo for the gun online somewhere when I get time to do some shopping but in the meantime wanted to inquire about what to expect from my recently purchased Remchester loads.  I've never used any sort of Winchester ammo other than shotgun shells, and never thought too highly about the Remington .22LR stuff I used to consume in bulk.

Your experience with these rounds?  Recommendations for future online purchases?

Thanks!

Tristan

Lots of folks swear by this ammo; a smaller number swear at it.

I've shot some without problems. Seemed to reliable and accurate enough.

But a number of folks I know or know of have had extraction problems.

If you look at the rims of the cartridges you'll see that the extraction notch around the base of the cartridge is much different with Winchester White Box than with other ammo.  Seems to cause big problems from some guns.  This might NOT be the case with yours...

I use the White Box 9mm ammo all the time in everything I own that uses 9mm.  Never a single problem.  I just bought 9 100 round boxes today.

Are you guys using Win-Clean? My other guns hate it.
My CZ-100 flat-out gobbles it up.

Last white box i bought was .223 i dont see it in 9mm
around here. even at WAL-MART. This is SPEER country.

I've used UMC in my .380..fed fine..it seemed weaker than the  Wolf .380.

The new lead free Environmentally friendly ammo may be friendly to the environment but it is causing all types of problems. Hard primers are the primary problem  and this type of ammo seems to have just enough power to cycle the slides on most guns when the gun is held in a locked position. The jamming problems start when the gun is not held absolutely steady.

FWIW- Winclean has performed flawlessly for me in my Taurus 9mm.  (I'll have to let you know how it goes with my CZ when I get it.)  It DOES seem to keep my gun cleaner than most other ammo I have tried.

It certainly contains lead but is jacketed (including the base of the bullet) to lessen lead evaporation when fired. (BEB - Brass-Enclosed-Base) Also, it supposedly has no heavy metals in the primer.

I like it.  Shoots the same as my defensive ammo.  (Exact same bullitt weight.)  After a magazine or two of defensive ammo, I switch to 9mm Winclean.

Oops.  Just realized this is NOT a 9mm forum.  Sorry.  Maybe this will help anyway.

YMMV,

Thanks for the input, folks.  Got fired from my job the other day and figured it would be a good time to shoot my new CZ 83.

A quarter of the UMC's misfed and had to be manually guided into the chamber.  They sucked.  Misfeed hell. Not fun when your a big man with sweaty hands trying to manipulate a slippery new little gun.

Had absolutely no problems with the Winchester.  Well, one misfeed, no doubt due to the presence of a UMC round in the magazine.

No problems with extraction; didn't anticipate any.  Beautiful gun and I anticipate it will be more functional with increased use.

As for accuracy; I hit what I was shooting at: old Coke cartons placed 20 - 50 ft in front of me (no, not at my boss).

I have not had any trouble with any ammo in my CZ-83???  I honestly don't shoot much UMC, no reason other than it's usually not priced as low as the Winchester 100 round box at Wally.
I did order a case of PMP 9mm yesterday from Century Arms.  They had been out a long time, but have it back in stock and at $109/1,000 delivered...no shipping charges or sales tax...I could not pass it up!
