Bren 805 Barrel Extender
« on: March 31, 2016, 06:31:14 PM »
Does any make a 5" barrel extender for the 805? One that can be pinned to the pistol barrel on one end and on the other be threaded in 1/2 x 28 so it can accept brakes, compensators or suppressors?

MFIAP.com makes an extender, but I think it's 7" long. Once he's back from vacation, you can ask if he'd cut and thread the extender at an extra cost.

OTOH, the Bren thread size is the same as an AKM, so it's not hard to find extenders for it.

Thanks. I saw that. I'll ask him if he can do a 1/2x28 on the other end.

I found a barrel "extension" that could work from CNC Warrior, 14x1 at 4" long. That with a 1" 14x1 to 1/2x28 adapter, makes the Bren a regular sized carbine. This would work well with a muzzle brake but will start looking like flagpole with a suppressor. I put on the suppressor with the adapter and cheek brace and it is now a fairly long firearm.

Thing is, either way, I may have to do the permanent pinning myself (am going for silver solder). The better gunsmiths here are some drive aways and they require almost two weeks to do the job.

While waiting for the barrel extensions, trying out stabilizing braces. This is the newer ACE Galil SB that is almost a stock.....looks like one anyway. The Comp M4 may have to go as this firearm needs some weight loss.....maybe a smaller red dot would work better.

Read up on the high temp silver solder.   Posted this previously.  Pin and spot weld is much better for your barrel IMHO.

One of the primary points of wear on barrels is at the muzzle crown where gases push around the bullet uncorking from the barrel, widening the muzzle crown area... What counter-boring is used to fix.

Soft steel will spread more here, regardless of chrome, and largely defeating the purpose of chrome.

Silver solder is rated for 1200*F.  Steel is annealed at 1400*F.  Do you really think the average bubba w/ his blowtorch and brownells solder is certain that he's not overheating the barrel by less than 200*F, 15%?  At least part of the barrel is likely to exceed that temp and soften...

Silver solder also causes/locks in corrosion.

It's simply not a good idea.

Ok, extension/ adapter is here. My intent is to pin and weld the end where the extension screws into the barrel and weld one or two of the detent holes between the extension and the adapter. Am waiting for the welding machine and would like comments, suggestions in the meantime. The length is not as long as I imagined. It is over 5" but looks good. i've seen someone do this on a video (Cool blind fellow who fires a "carbinized" Bren).  Here's a pic.

A forum member here posted the barrel change torque specs not too long ago.  It looks to be a relatively easy swap.  The issue would be finding a longer barrel.

Why I'm mentioning is that if you're going to have the extra length, you might as well have it functional.  Barrel extensions do little for velocity while barrels themselves do.

Just something to consider.

As for your looks and setup, I definitely think your extension will work.

Thanks. I'll post pics of the pinned and welded portions when done. I'm hoping i don't mess it up as I did last.

Here it is. Not at all pretty but it should work. I still need to do additional re-bluing on the extender but its is pinned, welded and "carbinized."

In the past, while I was waiting on my stamps I've had a guy on GunBroker that was selling barrel extensions make a few different extensions as well as one for my Bren 805P ... they are made of aluminum so they have to be pinned on, I've always been very happy with his work.

Here's a link to his listings:

Thinking out loud, but a krink 4 piece type brake extension would be pretty killer for minimizing muzzle flash out of this sbr. I just wonder about the weight since usually steel bodies I believe...  They do disassemble from the front though, which is good for permanent attachment...
