CZ-82's are C&R, but not CZ-83?

Does anyone know why CZ-82's are C&R eligible? And why are CZ-83's not? They're practically the same thing, what gives?

The curator of the West Point museum requested C&R status for the 82 and BATFE granted it.  He didn't request it for the 83.  Yeah, it would have been nice if he'd requested both, or it would have been nice if BATFE had granted both on the basis of their similarity, but that didn't happen.

I'm thinking that the CZ-82's are no longer made so they were eligible.  CZ-83's are current production, so they can't be C&R's.

Sadly that is what people are willing to pay. Most of the ones on GB in the last 6 months have went for at least $800.

I got my NIB 2015 production CZ83 for $499 on Gunbroker.  There were a couple others at the time for around the same price.  Mine was the harder (more expensive) one that came qwith two 10 round magazines and is CA and NY compliant.

I just received my second CZ-82 today to replace the one stolen from my car in a smash & grab. Great condition but cost me $405 with shipping on my C&R. I really like these guns, I use mine as a carry gun.

I guess since the CZ-83's are still made they wouldn't be C&R, but why are the 82's eligible? Is it because Czechoslovakia is no longer a country?

JoePfeiffer explained it above. You can petition ATF to add a "new" item (less than 50 years old) to the C&R list. They don't always accept the petition, but both the CZ vz82 and the Radom P-64 were added to the C&R list (as were East German and Russian made Makarovs, but not those from other countries).

CZ 82 makes a great car-gun - 12+1 in standard mag.  Fits nice in hand, well balanced and a pretty potent round.
I must say if I were to use a 9mm Mak for carry, I would go with the East German Mak.  Even though 8+1, it is sleak and smooth in feel and action.
Conceals well, handles very well and is accurate.  Beautiful gun.

CZ 82s were military firearms that are no longer made, hence they have historical value and the bATFe allowed them to be deemed as C&Rs.
CZ 83s are commercial market firearms (still in limited runs of production) and would not be eligible to become C&Rs until 2033 or later.

Silly, perhaps, but that's the way the rules are.

True, that is why the no longer in production CZ 82 was classified as a curio and relic (albeit an arbitrary selection process) rather than the 50 year old rule.
On the other hand since CZ 83s are still in production and none are over 50 years old, it is highly unlikely (as in zero chance) that the bATFe would re-classify them as curios and relics.

Other than the end of CZ 83 production and the bATFe subsequently reclassifying them,  the first CZ82 pistols to become C&Rs under the 50 year rule would occur circa 2033.

But (as I pointed out many posts ago) the 82 wasn't granted C&R status under the 50 year rule.  It was because the curator of the West Point museum requested it.
