CZ American 455 Accuracy Issues
« on: July 24, 2016, 08:33:45 AM »
I have purchased a CZ model 455 recently and have tried many different kinds of ammunition with it to find out just what it likes to eat. My problem is every 5th or 6th round will be a flier. Naturally some ammo behaves better than others. Has anyone else had this problem and what was the resolution?

Thanks,

Dave

Rimfire ammo these days isn't what it was.

You can spend even more on ammo, but it's no guarantee of better ammo.

Are your fliers high/low?

Also, remember your CZ is a sporter rifle, not a bench gun.

What kind of average groups are you getting without the flier? How much is it opening the group up?

I have this exact problem.  I haven't paid attention to the round count between fliers, though. I should figure that out.  The flier opens a group up significantly.  Until now I've attributed it to the Federal Automatch ammo I've been shooting and/or random Colorado gusts.

My 455 is so sexy and I think I'm getting it dialed in... 2-3 rounds through a single hole at 50y... and BAM, flier. Opens the group up by 2-3 inches. It's so frustrating.

Bedding might be an option for you.  The 455 series guns seem to benefit from being bedded.

dcm, streets ahead,

seriously, 2-3rnds of .22lr in one large hole at 50yds is the DREAM,  getting a flier outside.. just user error or ammo inconsistently.. WHAT are you complaining about.. you are talking about 3 shots in a woodchucks eye, and then flying 2" off that?  really, if you can do that Consistently.. you have Nothing to complain about!  that is as good as it gets.. really, to many variables to factor from there, and yes, hate to say it... shooter error is the greater percentage of change.. really.

sorry, really..  but anything that groups like you say at 50yds.. is a keeper and then sum!

I have a 455 American in 22lr that is almost boringly consistent.

Almost boring, it still amazes me every time. Best of luck troubleshooting your culprit.

I have a 455 varmint thumbhole that did the same thing.  My other two CZ rifles do not.  I knew it was not me.  I had the gun pillared and bedded and the problem went away.  I am guessing there is some movement in the stock.  Also try adjusting the screws at different torque settings to see if that helps.  I believe the factory setting is 25 ft. lbs.  Also SK Standard Plus is my go to ammo in my three CZ rifles.

Check out ebay seller duck73050.

He offers them for 452's and 527's. He'll likely sell you the pillars for the 455.

Dave, before you settle on questioning the inherent accuracy of your new rifle, there are several other factors I would try to rule out first. The biggest one would be the trigger.

1. If your trigger is a new, stock trigger, it's probably decent to good for a .22 rifle, but not so good for shooting groups. I have a new 452, and while the trigger is not bad, it's still easy to shoot flyers with it, and hard to consistently shoot tiny groups.

2. Ammo sensitivity. While all .22's are ammo sensitive, some are much more sensitive that others. If you find what your rifle "likes," that may be all it takes to eliminate those flyers.

3. Scope, rings, etc. Are you using a quality scope and rings? Is it mounted properly, and have you check to make sure it's not loose, and/or moving when you shoot?

4. Should be 3b. Are your action screws on the rifle tight?

5. Bench shooting equipment. I shoot, by choice, from a bench with sandbags. I probably would get better results if I used a lead sled, or something like that. Shooting consistently good groups from sand bags is not easy for me- but practice makes me better.

Hope you get to the bottom of this Dave. Good luck, and enjoy your CZ.

how many rounds down range?  My 455 was pretty much a 2-2.5" gun at 100 yards when i got it.  just shoot the bleep out of it.  I just keep shooting mine.  had quite a few rounds of hornady 17gr through it last season and it has tightened up trmemndously.  its as of right now a sub 1" gun.  its jsut my opinion that they shoot in real well over time.  probably 1k rounds or more down my barrel.  ive cleaned it exactly 1 time.

Try getting some match grade ammo. Go for some wolf/sk/lapua rifle match.  It's all made by lapua. Go check out Sportsman's guide or www.outdoorlimited.com    It's usually around 8 bucks a box.  My 1936 pre a Winchester 52 loves the lapua.  If I don't drink coffee before I shoot I can easily shoot 1/2" 5 round groups.  I'm looking to pickup a 455 evolution with bull barrel in the near future.   You can also try rws target or match.  Aguila rifle match is also ok. Go for the 40 grain lead instead of the higher velocity 36 grain copper hollow point.

I recently purchased a CZ 455 American 22LR.  I've had it at the range once.  I remember being disappointed with nearly every rifle I have ever bought out-of-the box.  A few have required extensive mods to accuratize.  I have to say, this is not the experience with the CZ.  For each ammo type, the CZ grouped smaller or the same as my other modified match-barrel free-floatet custom trigger 22.   Even just-out-of-box it is an excellent rifle.   Over the years as the rifle and I break-in, I expect only better result.

Remove all other factors, ammo consistentany is the largest contributor to group size.  Buy the expensive stuff, you'll put them trough the same whole.  By the cheap stuff, you might as well not bother.  The late ammo producing boom hasn't done us any favors.  Some normally dependable brand have become to show increased variation.  It used to be a box of CCI SV was always solid. Now, it seems like rolling the dice if a lot is good or not.
