One more spare to consider keeping.
« on: August 06, 2016, 01:38:05 AM »
one of my heavy use 58 rifles had a top cover pin sear off.  Don't know how when or where.  While it still worked, the broken part made it more difficult to remove. Might be good item to put on the spare parts list. Never had one break before. Part is about $9, still available at many places including OOW.

If your not familiar with take down or disassembly this part is vey easy to R&R.  Remove top cover push down on the rear portion of the FCG leaf spring which pushes up on a vertical pin that holds the cross pin in place. R&R.  These vertical retainer pins are sometimes filed down a bit to eliminate binding of the cross pin.

What parts have broken on your VZ.58? What spares, besides spring sets to you store?

Fixed

Other spares I store (besides furniture, mags, and spring sets.)

A buddy with a vz2008 called all upset.  Said he couldnt get his VZ topcover off and when he finally did the spring was all mangled.  It was just the striker spring and I had a spare on hand to help him out with.  Not sure what he did i'm guessing he didnt release the striker before disassembly somehow.

Havent broke anything yet.  And by the way that is an awesome german looking camo job on that VZ.  Is that a water dip?

Finally picked up some spare parts after I had the striker break (after ~2000 rnds by me) which mangled the striker spring. Got a couple new strikers, an extra piston and a spare of all the other springs  for good measure. Guess a spare take down couldn't hurt.

KW - My guess is that he probably installed the top cover w/o ensuring that the striker spring was inside the striker.  Then likely charged the rifle which mangled the spring got it binded/tangled up on something (most likely culprit would be the sear engagement portion of the striker)...

To get just a few spare parts, Numrich is an excellent source.  I don't like paying $5 in shipping for a $4 part and if you call their 1-800 number during business hours, they will provide a $4.95 shipping credit code to be used for online orders.  They also have shipping coupons on their Facebook page on Wednesdays.

Another good source is the vendors on Ebay based in the Czech and Slovak republics.  Their prices on single items are excellent but shipping is very steep.  I emailed a couple of them and they were accommodating with combining shipping on multiple parts.  Much of their inventory is new-old stock.

A couple of years ago the best parts kit deal was to just get another $399 VZ2008.  Clearview Investments and Centerfire Systems still sell kits for about $300.

I just saw this thread from 2007.  Scroll down a bit and you'll see a listing of different parts kits.  Dont cry when you see the prices:

Best source for parts I've found is ebay as well, but shipping has been pretty reasonable. Just ordered two 10 round VZ58 mags for $30 and shipping USPS first class was 8 bucks from Czech Republic. Most US based websites will charge me that just to stick a one dollar part in a USPS envelope that costs them less than 3 bucks to ship.
