A good first CZ for concealed carry
« on: January 26, 2017, 03:50:21 PM »
New to the forum. Not yet a CZ owner but I'm really keen on purchasing one that I can conceal carry if necessary. Would be kept in my vehicle or on my person (or at the range). Would not be used for home defense as I already have firearms I trust for that purpose. I've never owned a SA/DA before but am willing to train to become comfortable with one. So far I'm leaning toward a decocker but would consider a manual safety. I'd likely carry condition 3. I don't live in or visit areas where I'd feel compelled to carry past that. I know you never know...but I believe if I train properly I can be ready to prepare in a matter of seconds. I'm hoping for some suggestions. I like the P01 but have considered the RAMI. I just like the idea of having a rail in case I do decide to use it for home defense one day I can attach a light. I'm concerned too small won't feel comfortable in my hands which may result in me using it less at the range. It would go in a concealed holster or jacket with built in carry holster. Some guys carry subcompact but use extended mags with a sleeve for range use. Thanks for any suggestions

If you like the rail, go with the P-01.  No rail, PCR.  I think the P-01 and PCR feel much better in the hand than the Rami does.

I'm with Viking on the rami. I know some people love em but for me its an awkward little guy in the hand. I never weighed it but I have handled and shot one and I didnt care for it. Its pretty easy to carry a slightly larger gun like the ones suggested and if it is going to be a range play gun and possibly do home defense I would go with the larger gun. That p01 is pretty sexy.

I have been carrying the p07 for a year and with some work it is a great do it all gun that is extremely accurate and disappears in a solid holster iwb or in a pancake with light cover garment but were I to do it all again I would be very satisfied with my Steel compact for daily use which was pretty perfect from the box and just has a nicer feel and shootability to it with no muzzle rise. Just a flat almost boring shooter. The little extra weight doesn't bother me but I haven't tried hiking in the AZ heat with it yet.

thanks for the suggestion. I didn't even think of the PCR. I like that it has the loaded chamber indicator which would make me more comfortable as a carry in public. Anything else notable that would make me lean that way?
I didn't

Thank you. I'd like to go as big as I can while still maintaining a good degree of concealability. Why deal with the extra recoil and fumbling for a better grip when not needed?

Aside from size I'd also like to know differences in functionality that might make one a better carry option than another ie. Better sights, easier to manipulate controls. From an outsiders perspective, the CZ line mostly all look the same (awesome looking of course) and it's hard to tell what I might be missing if I just chose one. I handled the RAMI at a store and while it did seem small, I also figured that it would make for easier concealment.

I suggest the P-01.
I own both a P-01 and a RAMI safety version. In my opinion the P-01 fits better in the hand and it is easier to manipulate the controls. This is all subjective, being that peoples hands are different. I do carry my RAMI if I know I will be sitting a lot that day because I carry AIWB (appendix in the waistband) at about the 1 o'clock position. The shorter barrel does really make a difference for this style of carry.
The recoil is very manageable on both, but because I seem to get a better grip (trainable either way) I seem to shoot the P-01 better.
The P-07 is also a very good choice, Its is close in size to the P-01 but will not accept standard CZ 75 magazines.
The P-01, RAMI safety version, and the P-07 all come with a luminescent painted three dot sight. The RAMI bd has tritium night sights.

Noted. Guessing poly frame because of weight. Substantial capacity and rail is good if needed. Will take a look

For a double stack carry piece I'm real partial to my P 01 omega.  There is something about its balanced combination of size, weight, capacity, accuracy, reliability, and dynamics.  I shoot mine a lot better than I shoot our P 07.

For a single stack carry piece, I'm partial to my shield.

Honestly, if I was to pick just one CZ pistol for basic CCW carry and every other duty, I would go with the PCR. It is, to me, the best designed CCW pistol I ever found, and I did carry one for some time before I discovered I like a larger pistol for myself. Now, having said that, I must also say the brand new P10C is really gathering a lot of interest as a CCW pistol, but we have very little hard info as we have very few pistols available yet! But it looks like it will be the flagship of the CZ CCW pineup in the future.  8)

Either my PCR or 75B Compact are with me 98% of the time. The PCR just may be the perfect all around pistol since it holds nearly as much ammo as a full sized gun yet carries light and comfortably and accuracy is outstanding.

That is also my favorite single stack.  My favorite double stack is my PCR.

Buy a PCR, P-01 or P-07 while waiting to find a 2075 RAMI BD.

Any of the 75 Compacts are well-suited for concealed carry. I carry my P-06 the most, but CZ just discontinued them and they may be hard to find. The PCR is about as close to perfect as you will find in many respects, so I'd probably go with it, since for concealed carry most folks prefer not to have a rail for potentially smoother draw. The practical differences between the PCR and P-01 are slight, however. Look for one that already comes with premium Meprolight or similar sights as those are sometimes available.

BTW, many of us who already have a nice selection of CZs are drooling over the upcoming P10C if you can wait until they become generally available.

If you are active duty/veteran or first responder, call CZ-USA and ask for their price list.

Personally, I now carry a 75D Compact; it's relatively light weight, carries and conceals really well, has the capacity I want (14+1 - depending on where you live, YMMV), and it's easy for me to shoot (I'm a bit more accurate with my CZ than my SIG P229, which I love).  However, do not take our word on any of these opinions; you should plan to visit your LGS or gun show and hold them yourself.  See what fits you.  And, really consider if you want a decocker or a manual safety.  Personally, I don't want a manual safety for my EDC, just one less factor to worry about in the process.

BTW, I really wanted a RAMI until I had the opportunity to do an A-B comparison with the 75D Compact; the RAMI was nice, but it just didn't feel as good or fit as well in my hand.

Just my opinion.
