Will Scorpion handle +P+ Ammo
« on: February 02, 2017, 01:24:16 AM »
I've got Hirtenberger L7A1 9mm +P+ MG ammo. Any body try this stuff?

That's some hot stuff, it might handle it but not very much of it. I wouldn't chance it myself.

I've run  Federal 115 gr +P+  (9BPLE) through mine without ill effect.

I tend to save it though, as I don't have much of it.  :(

L7A1 is hotter and with a 124 gr. bullet. Here's something I found about it on another forum:

Hirtenberger is a manufacturer of many pistol loadings; from mild to +p+ (+). The original post refers to 9x19mm Nato surplus ammo w/ the headstamp L7A1 and usually bearing "90"or "91". This ammo employs a 124 grn FMJ bullet and generates EXTREMELY high pressure. A close friend sent some of this ammo to a lab for pressure testing in the late 90s and it generated over 45,000psi. It will usually result in more than 1330 fps and often as high as 1400 fps out of a 5" handgun barrel (power factor well in excess of the current USPSA floor for Major).

Can't be good on a poly blowback subgun.

Thanks for the replies guys. I used this stuff in my Uzi SMG which has a very heavy bolt as does the Scorpion but yes with a polymer frame this might not be the best choice. Thanks again.

+P+ is an undefined parameter.  SAAMI standard goes to 35,000 PSI.  +P goes to 38,500.  +P+ is undefined. It means the manufacturer believes pressure to be higher than +P, and of course you should assume as much.  It may be a little or a whole heck of a lot over +P.  Or in the case of some boutique manufacturers, it may mean it hasn't been pressure tested at all.  So you can't really ask if a gun is okay for +P+ because NO gun is rated for +P+ as +P+ doesn't have a defined upper limit.  ;)

FYI -- The parts of your gun that contain pressure are all made of steel.  Whether or not a gun uses polymer parts is unrelated to its ability to handle cartridges of certain pressures.

Maybe answering a question will  answer the question:  WHY?

I have heard that there is some NATO machine gun round out there like that. Hot stuff.

I believe the standard spec for NATO 124 ball is close to SAAMI plus P as it is.

You're going to get about 1400 fps from them:

I've only shot a few 115gr loads that will hit 1400 from the EVO (brown bear is one). Similiar 124gr "NATO" loads (Win, IMI) will clock about 1250 fps from the EVO. I didn't notice anything weird on the cases after firing them, and the gun didn't esplode. I'd say they should be fine in the EVO, just wouldn't make a habit of running them all day.

I really don't see the need for +P+, since there isn't a SAAMI rating for +P+. I would think a 1200+ fps +P would be good enough?
