New to me CZ 27
« on: February 08, 2017, 12:33:46 AM »
So I was in a local gun shop, waiting to pick up a transfer purchase, and my son wandered over to the used counter while I filled out the paperwork. I hear "hey dad, come look at this..."

It came home with me, for $225. I think we did well!

Wow. Looks like a very solid condition.  Price is fantastic. Grips look excellent. What a great purchase. Kudos to your son for his great eye.

Sweet. Looks like there's still straw color on the trigger?

Yep, still straw colored. Gun looks very well tended to, not shot much, and the grips as stated look great. Can't tell from those pics, but the barrel has a Nazi eagle and a K stamp, and the DR on the trigger guard. I guess that's an early post-invasion German pick up?

Great find.

I would have bought it if I saw it for $225 in a local shop, that's for sure.

Took it to the range today, a couple of observations-

first off, this is my first .32 acp. What a joy to shoot that in a solid, compact package like this. It has minimal recoil, easy handling, and VERY accurate. It's like a .22lr target pistol almost, but with a one-time mainstream centerfire cartridge.

Ok, the bad... since this is my first, I didn't have any ammo for it, so I bought a box of what the shop had. They only had WWB and Hornady HPs, and I didn't want to buy 25 rds of JHP to test out a new/old gun not designed for it.
But the Winchester had issues, too. These were flat-nosed and caused an occasional FTF. Also, I see Winchester hasn't "cleaned up their act" so to speak, the ammo was filthy; as my past experiences with 9mm had shown me.

So... range report:
the gun I was picking up when I found this, was a heavily worn West German Sig P226 that I got for a decent price (for a Sig). That gun is definitely "full of character", but shot very well. Put a box of S&B 115 gr FMJ through it, and a box of WWB through the CZ 27.

I started out with the Sig while my son shot the CZ, and he soon found the feeding issue. Meanwhile, I was doing a basic function check on the Sig, to make sure it would run... it did. My rds through the Sig were hitting in the black while shooting at 7 yds, standing, firing in a fairly rapid manner. As I said, gun shot well IMHO.

We swapped after a couple of mags, and I noted a couple things- I was not getting the FTF as much (I did still get a couple), so maybe the gun had to work itself out, or maybe I had a better grip, ... or maybe the ammo is just inconsistent.
The other thing I noticed was that I wasn't just hitting "in the black", I was putting a quarter-sized group on the bullseye, an immensely gratifying experience, since I wasn't bearing down and concentrating  ;D. This little fella was a laser.

I've ordered a few boxes of Fiocchi, the price seems reasonable enough and according to the pictures, the nose is rounder. I'm hoping that will fix it.

Oh yeah, and since my son appreciated the gun so much and was the one that found it... it's his birthday present!

Jealous!!!!  I still need to add a 27 to my collectuon. That was one heck of a deal.  I've used Fiocchi, S&B and Prvi Partizan in all my 'old' pistols (especially those with not so common calibers) and they seem to work well.

Excellent price by todays standards! I have owned some 27 and have a hopefully a little helpful advice for you. I ran into a lot of the same issues you did at first. One I switched over to Pri, Fiocchi or Sellior. Any of the European rounds in FMJ cycle flawlessly. In the few times I did have issues, I found out the guns springs were well overdue for a change. I picked up new springs for all my mags and a new recoil spring from Wolff for under $20. It now fires every time without any FTF. You may want to keep the original springs for values sake nut switch them out with new ones just for shooting. Hopefully that should solve any issues. Your son did a great job!!!!!

The extractor groove and rim dimensions are slightly different between European 7.65 Browning and American .32 ACP. S&B seems to be the preferred choice for my vz50. You'll probably have similar experiences with US vs European ammo in your 27.

I got some more ammo in, this time it's Fiocchi. Bud's had it for $11.84, + $9 shipping on 5 boxes.

Red box, rounder nose, box has CIP markings and 7,65 Browning (.32 Auto) listed as the chambering.

This seems like a good deal on the ammo, and I've liked Fiocchi in other calibers. If everything else is equal, I prefer S&B, Fiocchi and PPU for most ammo. They all seem to run clean and accurate, and I particularly like to reward those manufacturers that continue to make obscure calibers (thank you PPU for 7.65 Argentine Mauser!  ;D)

Nice to hear that Wolff makes the springs. I will have to order a set.

At the risk of sounding ignorant (well, no risk, since I am),

I knew it was a nice price for the quality and age of the pistol, but I don't have much knowledge as to the actual value. I take gunbroker with a grain of salt, especially for older guns, as it seems that everyone wants to list things, but few sell.

No rust or scratches, grips intact, 1 mag... what's the basic estimate you guys would place on this? I don't plan on selling, I'm just curious on how good a deal we got.
Thanks

I've watched many a CZ 27 auction and it's not rare to see prices at least double what you paid (sometimes with period holders but not always).  I have a store in the area that specializes in military surplus (especially Lugers) and their 27s have gone even higher (they have some that I want but just can't justify paying their price).

You did awesome on your find.  You have two hard to find versions of the CZ-27 combined into one gun.  Pistols with the early slanted slide serrations are extremely hard to find.  I personally have only ever seen 2-3 come up and I am constantly searching for them.  One of the ones I've seen was in much worse shape than yours brought over $600.  It was a little earlier sn in the 6,000's with wood grips so that might have helped it out some.  I've seen more DR marked pistols than with slanted serrations.  I don't know how many DR guns were made but most of the DR marked one's seem to be around sn 15000-20000.  I've yet to see one of them go for under about $850 and usually it's over 1000.

All of the CZ-27s that I have shot worked quite well with regular ball ammo and were very accurate.  Congratulations on you find and I hope you enjoy it!
