My 18 year old son shoots a STI Spartan in 9mm we picked up a few years ago.  We added Dawson Precision fiber optic sights and some aftermarket mags. and he was good to go.  Shoots great, heavy enough that there's almost zero felt recoil.   We've been really happy with it.  Good luck!

I really liked the Springfield 9mm EMP4 I tried last year. Only 2/3 of the price of a DW.

The EMP4 really caught my eye as well (on paper).  It is actually scaled down in size for 9mm rather than most mentioned that are full size as their .45 brethren.  If you get one of these, then you'll have to also get a "real" 1911 in .45.  Report back as to how they compare!

DW PM9 for the win! Love mine. It's been great with 5,000+ rounds through it so far.

Another happy PM9 owner here.

with regards to purists / and J.B himself..  I suspect.. if he had lived long enough.. he himself woulda started considering new ammo considerations for his baby the 1911.   and yes, I know about the 9mm B/HiPower.. but given more time.. it would have happened I think.

I already have several 1911 .45 ACP versions (modern and 1930s/1940s manufacture, including one that is a Commander-sized). As much as I'd like a few of Dan's, they are outside of my current price range. If the EMP 4" wasn't $1000 (or more) at the local shops, I would probably already own one.

I was actually trying to convince the OP to do the 2 for 1 -- an EMP4 AND a more traditional 1911.. O0. But you do need one too!

... and so do I?

Scorpion is next on the list (I'll get it next Thursday, which gives me a little over a week to get a red dot sighted in before its first demo session), followed by an DS Arms FN-FAL. If the P-10c starts shipping, that is next on the list. But after that, at some point, will be the 9mm 1911.

Very rarely have I personally seen a 9mm 1911 work well enough to use for anything more than a fun gun.

But I might be a little sour.... ::)
I might know what im talking about....but today, I don't.....

Have you thought about the SR1911?  Aluminum frame, and some upgrades (trigger and hammer) come stock!

Yes I've considered the Ruger. I have several Ruger pistols and decided I wanted something full size with at least a 5" barrel. I'm looking at the Springfield 1911 below.

I'm so tempted to pick up a 1911 9mm because the Shadow 2 is taking so long. Taking everything in me to resist the urge!

The PM9 looks amazing.

My wife , Carol and I love 1911's. Having a private range on our property , we shoot a lot. We have 2 Sig's .22LR each have over 10k rds. through them. We also have a .45 Taurus SS and a .45 Ruger. I looked for a 1911 in .40 s&w but gave up not being able to find what I really wanted....I went with a Ruger SR40 15+1. My favorite 1911 to shoot is a Rock Island Arms TCM 22 / 9mm. The TCM .22 is a little pricey but I have shot about 12k rds. of 9mm in it. I have completed trigger jobs on all of our 1911's and have polished all moving parts . I also have a RIA 1911 on order in .22 Magnum .

I have a (Series 80) 9mm Conversion Unit for my Delta Gold Cup
It runs smooth as silk
Interesting piece of trivia:
The Colt 9mm Conversion Unit uses the same Recoil Spring as the Colt .22 lr Conversion Unit
But the Slide Stops are NOT the same
