Want a P 01, but different. Ideas?
« on: April 15, 2017, 09:54:43 AM »
I love my P 01. I would like to find something similar (with decocker), but single-stack, thinner, lighter, smaller for CC.  Bersa Thunder 380 isn't any thinner from the specs I've read. I can't think of anything else. Any ideas?

How about a Beretta 85FS; .380 single stack and a 1.18 grip width.

Hmmm, hadn't thought about that. I do like that gun.

I have two 84's, double stacks, and enjoy shooting them.

Redbike, I understand what your asking for. I have a PO-1 with my Kadet kit on it,
great pistol.

Ever seen/handled a Browning BDM?

9MM.  15 shots.  The thinnest double stack 9MM ever made (feels like a single stack in your hand).  Only about 2 or 3 oz. heavier than a P01, but with a forged steel frame.  Ambidextrous decockers that also drop the slide when you insert a new magazine - if you want to use them for that.

All in all, sort of a wild looking pistol for the 1980's (when it was released).

Has a "switch" in the slide that turns it from SA/DA like a P01 to DAO.

No firing pin safety mechanism (like a CZ or so many of the striker fired guns) but it only moves the rear of the firing pin into position for the hammer to hit it when you pull the trigger, so it still has a safety mechanism that keeps the firing pin from hitting the primer - unless you pull the trigger.

Downside is magazines can be hard to come by.  I've found a few over the years by keeping an eye out and buying 2 or 3 when I see them for sale somewhere on line.

Can't get photobucket to work.  I'll post a pic when it finally decides to work.

Got it.

They came in all blue or two tone.  Mine's a two tone.

I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

I am somewhat familiar with the BDMs. I loved my HPs, wish I still owned one, but don't want to pay the price to get one.

I'll throw it out there, though striker-fired is probably not on your radar. P99C is smaller (overall), lighter, striker-fired, decocker, but unfortunately you don't gain anything on width and it's double-stack. If they had a similar decocker on the PPS (single-stack; 1" width; 6-8 rounds), I'd buy one in a heartbeat and it would seem to fit your criteria. As is, though (i.e., no decocker), the PPS (or PPS M2) is not a bad carry piece. [I have both the 99C and the PPS M2, and enjoy both; and they're pretty good shooters as well :-)]
FWIW.

Double action with a decocker.  I would look at the S&W third gens like a 3913 or 3914.  Grip angle is slightly different, but many don't notice it, might want to point slightly low.  IMO they are one of the most under rate pistols made.

Aren't the slimmest aluminum P01 grips even slimmer than that?

Anyway, I've searched for such a thing as well, and I agree, the closest I've found is the Smith 3rd gen 3913 (stainless) 3914 (black) 908 (value line), or if you want to go even smaller, the CS9 (Chief's Special).

I've been seeing those S&W's (used of course) on the internet lately.  Seems like some outfit had several different models of them.  Aluminum framed, stainless steel, etc.  Sometimes my "want" light comes on even when I don't need it.  Those were tempting.

You've probably already considered a CZ RAMI BD (sub-compact)?
It's only 1.25 wide, not a single-stack but really not much thicker than many single-stacks.
You do trade-off a little extra weight for the extra capacity though.

Smaller and easier to carry than P-01; same capacity and manual-of-arms as your P-01.
The only problem is finding one.  When a batch finally comes in; they disappear overnight.

Yes, thought of the Rami. A bit pricey and too hard to find. Would prefer thinner.

The S&Ws are not something I had considered. Will need to look into those.

The S&W 3913 3914 suggestion from The Conservative is very interesting. I found a USCCA review from 2006 with all the specs. Slide mounted decocker-safety like Beretta (not my fave) Apparently, S&W also made a 'value' version in the 908 and 908S. You learn something new every day on the CZ Forum.

OP, check out the Thunder 380 CC model. It may be what you seek, as it's a little bit slimmer than the regular Thunder 380.
