Grip Size for competition. Grip diameter??
« on: May 18, 2017, 03:28:59 PM »
Maybe I'm way off base, but I'm concerned with my grips, or, more specifically, the size of my hands.

Even with the stock rubber grips on my SP-01, my fingers wrap almost all the way around the grip,
leaving only a very small space for my weak/left hand.  In fact, I'm pretty sure that during matches,
the heal of my left hand sometimes makes NO contact with the grip.

Is this a problem? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?  All the research I've seen on grip sizes
and back straps talk about trigger reach and issues with small hands.  All the pictures I've
seen show LOTS of room for the heal of the week hand to rest on the grip.  I don't.

If this is something I should fix, any suggestions on grips that would provide a larger
diameter?

Here are some pics:

Look at VZ grips palm swells. I have not used them but they may be an option for you to research.

Same problem here.  I've been using one of the simple Hogue hand-all sleeves.  Works pretty well for making the grip thick enough to provide some room for my support hand.

Only draw back is that the grip can stick to cover garment, so have to be very deliberate when drawing to make sure I clear the cover.

You might try flagging your strong hand thumb up next to/onto the decocker.  That's generally how "the pros" do it, and I find it does stabilize the gun better in double action.

The LOK palmswells are a bit bigger than the rubber ones but I've heard folks like the SSI Scales as well as the DAA Thick aluminum as well.

In reality, you appear to have pretty huge hands.  A tanfo large frame pistol might suit you better - a Stock 2 or 3 for instance.

When I lay my weak hand in there, my strong hand thumb rides up against the decocker. Can't show that and take a
picture too  ;)

Went to the range yesterday and tried these grips and the stock rubber grips.  While I think I did slightly better with the
stock rubber grips, it was marginal.  I think that my form still makes a bigger impact then the change in grips, and for now
I'll concentrate on that.  Someday I'll try the Hoag wrap around grips.

Thanks for all the replies!

If the rubbers are improving, I defintely think the LOK palm swells will be a good choice for you.

THe SSI Scales are nice, but they're obviously made for competition. I'm not gonna lie, they're not comfortable, and I am hesitant about giving a friend who wants to shoot just for fun the gun to shoot since the grip will likely turn them off entirely. When I use my Scales, I basically assume I have to deal with discomfort for the next 30 seconds, but it's worth it in the end.

Even shooting strong hand only you should flag your thumb like you're riding a 1911 safety.  Folding down like that creates a gap behind the beavertail allowing lateral movement on the frame - made worse in DA.  Play with it and see if it's easier to get a zero wiggle DA pull folded down or flagged up

I feel your pain!  I also have large hands (I wear 2XL gloves).  You might need to buy a few different grips before you find a pair that work for you.  I used to run a set of thin grips from CZCustom, but have switched to a pair of ergonomic wood grips made by Nill in Germany.  In my opinion, thin grips aren't made for guys like us.  They are for guys with small to medium hands.

Here's an old picture of me gripping my 75B .40.  I no longer use this grip technique, but you can see how the full size gun looks pretty small in my hands.

And the grips I ended up settling on (I shoot Limited)

And a picture from the rear to show the ergos of the grips.

Oh boy did I have problems with grip size.
I had them slim, medium and fat from CZcustoms
The aggressive checkering  grips could be put - but only if your fingers can take the pain.
Mine didn't - I had to disassemble them and put light rubber skateboard tape on them .
Now you should look for the first join on the DA pull
