SP-01 vs P-09
« on: May 21, 2017, 08:07:20 AM »
I am looking at SP-01 or the P-09 for a range/ home defense gun. I have a few CZ's already with the P-01 being the newest model. Steel guns are easier to shoot in general but the P-09 should be no problem in that area. I have read many write ups and was wondering about some other informed opinions?

I have both and I am sure everyone has a personal preference but for me the P-09 is the gun that gets shot the most. After you do the mods to both and fill them full of Cajun spice it would simply be a matter of personal preference. If you do up the P-09 with all available options, grips, sights, trigger and CGW's action parts with polish it is one sweet shooting package. You won't get shorted with either choice. The best thing to do is buy both.

I have an SP-01 Tactical that's proven to be my best overall defensive handgun, and I have a few. SP-01 DA/SA decocker, night sights, Surefire XC-1 light, accuracy, capacity, easy recoil comes right back on target; all good.

However, I'm considering a dedicated optic gun to mount my Delta Point Pro and I'm eyeballing CZ Custom's pre-milled and tuned P-09. With the P-09 omega trigger I could use either the decocker which i prefer on my defensive guns, or the safety which I prefer on my sport guns. Use it for sport until I'm comfortable with optic for defense. Supposedly it can be converted easily to decocker or safety with basic tools.

So, IMHO I don't think you can go wrong with either; or BOTH!

For the two you have chosen I would take the SP-01.  Not because that is what I have but because the weight of the gun will not be an issue.  In the end it all boils down to personal preference.
Thanks,

I have a Shadow Custom and a P09 Urban Grey.

I will tell you the P09 is softer shooting and has less muzzle flip then the Shadow. I really have no idea why but it seems that everyone who shoots both of them says the same thing.

If it was me I would get a P09 and fully CGW it.

I had the same decision between the SP-01 and the P-09 -- and for exactly the same intended purpose. I ended up buying the P-09 because I found one for $425, while the cheapest I could get the SP-01 for was $600. However, at the same time I got an all steel 75 Compact w/rail...which weighs an ounce or two more than the P-09.

Similar to what Kenneth says above, the P-09 is a dream to shoot. I much prefer it over the heavier but smaller SP-01 Compact. I am sure it has something to do with how the weight is balanced, but beyond that the stock trigger is pretty good and the accuracy is beyond my expectations.

I still want to get an SP-01 -- and you may end up with both too -- but you won't be disappointed by starting with the P-09. And if you're into Cajunizing (something I haven't seriously considered yet), then your savings over the SP-01 will help pay for that.

I have both plus a couple of others, P-07 and 75B.  I can't say enough good about the P-09.  It's my favorite of the four CZ 9mm's I have.

I'd buy another P-09 before I bought the SP-01.  The SP-01 is a good gun but the P-09 is my favorite.  I can't do the explanation justice, but it's just a workhorse that shoots like a dream.  Plus, the Omega fire control group is much easier to tune.

The nitride coating on my P-09 barrel just never seems to get any build up from heavy shooting.  It's so easy to clean compared to my SP-01 Tactical.

I'd buy the P-09.  In fact, after I buy a P-01, another P-09 is on my list.  My current one is FDE.

I was leaning towards the P-09. The urban grey with threaded barrel.  I like the looks of it as well and I am usually not attracted to plastic guns. Prefer old wheel guns when it comes to looks.

I have both.  The P-09 seems to eat every ammo I feed it and is less finicky about running dirty.  ;D  Whereas my SP-01 needs more TLC.  My P-07 is my dedicated HD gun whereas the P-09 and SP-01 bounce between HD and game gun roles.  For the money you can't beat the P-07 or P-09.

As everyone has indicated it really is a matter of personal preference. My personal preference is the SP-01. I have more then 1 CZ, I shoot the SP-01 by far more then any of the other CZ's or any other brand I own.

I can't really tell you why you should like the SP-01 more but I promise if you shot mine you'd want it to be yours. It is a siren of a handgun.
I am not the best shooter around nor am I the fastest or most accurate. That being said there isn't many people who press the trigger more then I do and there isn't many who smile like I do while they are pressing that trigger. When I shoot my other guns I always have a blast, no matter the gun, the caliber, or the make. When I am not shooting my SP-01.........I sometimes think how would I be doing right now if I was shooting the SP-01. It's probably irrational and could be some type of obsession, however I do not mind. My SP-01 is by far the best shooting most comfortable reliable hand gun I own. The P-09 is nice as well but if I were told I could only have one gun, thank goodness the previous administration is out, I would pick the SP-01 hands down. For me nice isn't good enough.

I have a P-09 FDE and a 75BD. I enjoy shooting both, and they are fully Cajunized. For the price of the P-09, one just can't beat the price. The slide is one good looking piece is steel and it absorbs the recoil like an all metal pistol.

Just picked up a Cajunized P-09 from a forum member...FEDEX is taking 6 days on a 2 day delivery  ::).......anyhow I digress, I am looking forward to trying something outside my box at least, kind of a staunch non-polymer, fire and brimstone guy but I'm softening up a bit, life's too short to miss out  ;D

I have both. Put a few hundred rounds through the SP-01 Tac and P-09 today. Here are my findings:

P-09:

Faster slide reciprocation compared to the SP-01. I also appreciate the added capacity. Decocker kind of smacks my thumb on the way down. Ergos are nice, but not as nice as the 75B line of pistols. Recoil is a little more flippy compared to the all steel guns, but it's super negligible as 9mm isn't all that bad in the recoil dept. DA and SA is noticeably heavier, and the SA is a little more mushy.

SP-01 Tac:

Slower slide movement, but the sights line up much easier shot after shot. Double taps are a joy. Decocker doesn't bite, and the ergos are a little nicer compared to the P-09. Feels super premium in the hand. Trigger is exceptional. DA is smooth and SA is a very clean break.

I'll be selling the bottom two, but only because I have to: https://imgur.com/a/l9JA5

The P-09's only fault is that it's being compared to the SP-01. It's a joy, and for the price it's a keeper. I just don't need two firearms to fill the same role.

If I didn't have my SP-01 to compare it to, I would be completely satisfied with a P-09, especially for the price. The P-09 and P-07 are both 100% reliable, very accurate, and pleasant to shoot.
My used SP-01 was a little finicky when I first purchased it, but most of the little issues I had were caused by me. The stock rubber grips make my SP-01 feel like it custom made for me, it's very comfortable to shoot, and I'm more accurate with it than any other pistol I've shot. I guess that's why it's my favorite pistol.
