I have a CZ83 IN LIKE NEW CONDITION AND SHOOTS VERY WELL AND ACCURATELY. I BOUGHT IT WITH A BOX I LOST A WHILE BACK. HOW CAN I TELL IF IT'S A SURPLUS OR NOT? IT HAS A NICE WOOD GRIP, A BIT BULKY. FINISH IS SHINY BLUE. THANKS.

My understanding is the surplus all have the big (relatively) looped trigger guard, and are marked made in Czechoslovakia. They came with the plastic grips. The CZ USA release has a squared off smaller trigger guard, and will say made in the Czech Republic. Surplus also has date of manufacture stamped on receiver, can't remember top of my head what those dates were, but most arriving in US as surplus were '89-'93, I think.

I believe all the surplus ones are CZ82, not CZ 83s.

There are a lot of surplus CZ83 pistols out there, e.g. Israel bought a lot of them.

I've even seen a CZ83 pistol marked with the "she XX" (where XX is the year, "87" IIRC).

I've bought 4 83's from gunbroker, all mid to late 80's, all "surplus". A little work on cleaning them up, and they are fine shooters.
Some Gunbroker 83's for sale now do not come with a mag. Czech the description before buying.
