Tacoma Mall Shooting
Six Wounded in Wash. Mall Shooting By RACHEL LA CORTE, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 57 minutes ago

A gunman opened fire inside a busy shopping mall Sunday, wounding at least six people and taking three others hostage in a music store before he surrendered to a SWAT team, authorities said.

Witnesses described seeing a clean-cut man walking backward through the mall, firing a rifle. At least six people were injured, one critically, as shoppers and store clerks scrambled for cover.

Dominick Maldonado, 20, of Tacoma was booked into the Pierce County Jail on six counts of assault and three counts of kidnapping, according to jail records reported by The Seattle Times and the Tacoma News Tribune. He was being held on $450,000 bail.

Court records show he has an extensive juvenile criminal history dating back to 1998. He has been convicted of burglary, theft and possession of burglary tools and he had been ordered not to possess any weapons, the Times reported.

The suspect came out of the Sam Goody music store without a gun and surrendered to the SWAT team, Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said. He said police were interviewing the victims and the three hostages  two men and a woman  to determine what happened during the nearly four hours he was inside.

While the suspect was in the music store, employee Joe Hudson was able to pick up a phone call from The Associated Press and say he and others had been taken hostage. He said little more but could be heard telling others that he was talking to the AP.

Susan Serveau said she also called her daughter, Kathy Riggans, 24, a manager at Sam Goody, as soon as she heard about the shooting.

"She was upset and scared. She was crying," Serveau said, standing in a parking lot near the mall. "All she would say was that she was OK."

Authorities said they began getting calls about 12:15 p.m. that shots had been fired inside the Tacoma Mall. The first caller said a gunman "was in the mall, walking along, firing," Fulghum said.

State Patrol and police units from nearby agencies clustered around an entrance at the south end.

Inside, Stacy Wilson, 29, of Bonney Lake, heard a popping noise and turned around.

"I saw the gunman randomly shooting. I ran with a group of women to Victoria's Secret," Wilson said. She said they crouched behind a wall in the store, and when the shooting stopped, an employee ran out and closed a security gate at the front.

Wilson said she heard 15 to 20 shots.

"He was walking backward and shooting. I couldn't see his face," she said. "Everyone was running and screaming."

A man told KING-TV the gunman was smiling as he fired an assault rifle in bursts of four to five shots.

The man said he told his daughter and grandson to run and then hid in the back of a store with his wife and granddaughter. He says they helped a woman who was shot in the leg, bandaging the wound and wrapping her in blankets.

A woman who said she made eye contact with the "very clean-cut" gunman before he opened fire told Northwest Cable News, "When I heard the shooting I thought, 'This is a joke. ... I couldn't believe this was actually happening, that someone would do this."

Betz Dejarnatt, who works at the J.C. Penney store, said workers were herded into dressing rooms and offices, then police took them outside to a parking lot.

Six people were taken to hospitals, most with minor injuries, according to Tacoma Fire Department Deputy Chief Jon Lendosky. One person was in critical condition at Tacoma General Hospital, spokesman Todd Kelley said.

Thanks for sharing.  Also, this holiday season its important to walk and shop in a confident manner, with good posture and keep aware of your perimeter and your surroundings especially since stores are open later with dark parking lots, etc., and always carry where allowed by law. .

Does Wash. state have a CCW law?  If so, I wonder if that mall had posted for no concealed firearms.

Either way,  the media will blame the gun and not the person and call for more stringent and draconian laws.  In my opinion, if the mall did post a no firearms law, then they should be sued for leaving citizens defenseless.  As far as I know , WA has a CCW provision.

"Washington is "shall issue" for both residents and non-residents. However the code allows the issuing authority 60 days (vs. 30 for residents) to investigate a non-resident applicant.

Washington State Exempts concealed pistol license information from public disclosure, under RCW 42.17.318."

My wife and I never shop anywhere she can't carry - my badge trumps "Do Not Carry" signs, but I won't leave her defenseless.
Heck, it's either WalMart or Sportsman's Warehouse, so neither place has an issue, anyway!8)
I wish a law abiding CCW holder would've nailed this creep, but then we'd never heard about it. The media would have buried it....>:

Actually CNN is now reporting that the most seriously wounded victim has a valid CCW and had drawn on the subject.  It's not on the national news page, but you can find it linked on some of the locals.

www.clickondetroit.com/ne...etail.html

I'll also mention that the initial news reports had the suspect armed with an 'assault weapon'.  It was changed to 'semi-automatic rifle' within a few hours.

Kinda scary stuff from CNN....the regular producers/editors must be on vacation....

but you see how quickly they were to call it an "assualt weapon".  Typical knee jerk reaction.

And how many times have we seen news reports (usually by CNN) that have labeled weapons 'assault rifle' or 'machine pistol' that never bothered to change to an accurate description even days later?

That they bothered to fix/clarify it at all, nevermind within hours is a HUGE step forward for the news agencies.  We can only hope they continue on this path.

Also, many initial story details are supplied by witnesses (some of whom don't know which end of a gun is which), filled into the story and sent off to broadcast as soon as possible to beat the other news teams to the story.  Having all the details absolutely correct before opening their mouths would be wonderful, but it isn't going to happen given human nature, much less news nature.

Now if they did a national followup story about the CCW holder almost preventing tragedy...giving it 40-60% the coverage they gave the initial incident...what a wonderful world it would be.

****ADDED***

The CNN execs have apparently called in from their vacations.  The expanded story I'm seeing now has "firing from an assault rifle and semiautomatic machine pistol".

Joy.

It's the same link I cited above.  Middle of the story for the new good stuff.

I had such hope there for a while.  :)

Its a real shame.  To me CNN is horrific.  Be they in Iraq missrepresenting our soldiers as sadists or at home missrepresenting what is actually going on.  To me ,the truth stated as -ENEMIES BOTH FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC- has never rang more true, no wonder our soldiers despise imbedded reporters and I would advise anyone who is either an LEO or an armed civilian, if ever approached by the media,  I don't care if its Fox or CNN,  the comment should always be -NO COMMENT-., ESPECIALLY if its after an armed encounter like the one above.  If I was an armed citizen in that mall and approached by the media, a very simple -NO COMMENT-, because whatever you say, they will edit and twist it to their own devises.

it's a shame more people don't carry concealed.  In a situation like this, where the gunman is walking backwards, it provides a wonderful opportunity to take advantage of surprise when you double tap him.

I just wonder how quick the DA would be to file charges against the man who drew on the BG if he had actually shot and killed him.

Excellent points, but as you say, one can never predict the actions of an overzealous DA with a personal and/or ideological agenda.  We can only be guided by our conscious and do the right thing.

i would hope that most sane people would consider taking out a crazed killer the "right thing" to do, but you never know ;)
