P01 Hammer Bite
« on: November 22, 2017, 06:39:37 PM »
I am in need of some assistance with my P01
I am having a horrible time with hammer bite when I shoot it. Due to the fear of getting bit it's hard to shoot it well.

Fully cajunized P01 Nato. I have talked to David and he believes the normal hammer won't offer much, if any relief.

It seems I have quite a bit of meat on my webbing of my hand causing the hammer to smash my delicate flesh.

Is there anything I can buy to assist?
I have the CGW Comp hammer.
Does anybody make a hammer that is very low profile, kinda like the Sphinx?
Any grips that have extended beavertail?

I really really don't want to sell/trade but I can't have a firearm that hurts to shoot.

The only thing I can think of is to have CGW cut the spur off and go spurless.

Decocker model, right?

Get rid of that extended back end on the hammer and keep using it like you have been.

Not sure of the effect of losing that little bit of metal.

I have no idea how my Tactical Sport is set up (spring wise) but its SAO and no spur on the hammer and it works fine.  I just can't thumb cock it like my Pre B CZ75 or my Compact or my 1911's.

I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

Forgot to mention, yes it's a decocker.

Cutting might be the way to go as I don't really use the hammer manually.

M1A4ME - What kind of hammer is that? One that was cut down?

That hammer is specifically made for the manual safety models. I haven't seen it made for the omega trigger system yet.

I've thought of cutting my Race Hammer since it contacts my beavertail on one of my pistols. I'd call David and make sure, but I remember talking to Scott and it not being an issue.

The TS hammer pictured is available from CZ-USA, but it's SAO and not appropriate for de-cocker use/carry.

I just looked that hammer up on the CZ USA web site.  Got a chuckle out of it.

It fits the Tactical Sport or Czechmate pistols, only.

The chuckle - For concealed carry use.

I cannot imagine trying to carry, concealed, a pistol that weighs 3&1/2 lbs. loaded (had mine on a scale awhile back).  When I wear mine (tried that, too, last spring) in a belt/duty holster I have to be sure I've got my suspenders on to keep it from pulling my pants down on the right side every few steps.

If I was going to pick one (on my own) to cut the back off of I'd look for one that was thicker up front and then refinish it with some cold blue (done right).  If you don't think you could do it on you own I'd call CZ Custom or Cajun Gun Works to see what they could do for you.

I've only modified a couple hammers.  I ground the spur off my Ruger Speed Six stainless steel .357 2&3/4" revolver for pocket carry (no refinishing required).  No functioning issues afterwards.  I also took a small amount off the spur of my Colt 1911 Series 80, also stainless steel, as the back of the spur was contacting the grip safety and making "unsightly" marks on the top of the grip safety.  No refinishing required on that one either.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

Remember that the 'wounding' of your skin is not from being pinched per se - it is from the hammer hitting your hand at great speed and the edges break the skin.  I bet if you removed enough metal from the rear of the hammer to smooth ALL surfaces, it would greatly reduce this effect.  It might eliminate it.  Same thing happened to me on my preB and HiPower. Polishing eliminated this.

I think that if you like the pistol you have a couple options. Either adjust your shooting grip lower, it may be uncomfortable at first, but it will be the quickest and cheapest option. Or call cgw have them and have them cut a custom rounded off hammer for you that can then be re-blued or treated with your favorite coating. Don't give up on the P01 it's a fantastic pistol and one hell of a shooter

Just a consideration:
The mass of the hammer + spring weight is designed to give XX lbs of strike on the primer.  Depending on your hammer spring strength be careful not to loose any more hammer mass than needed for comfort.  It might reduce the reliability to fire some types of ammo primers.  It may not be an issue to worry about,  but better to be careful than sorry.

Actually removing mass from the hammer will shorten locktime and should not cause any ignition issues.

I'll contact Cajun this week and see if David would be willing to modify a hammer and what it'll cost.

thanks for suggestions

The larger up-swept beaver tail like on the SP-01 is about he only thing that alleviates that problem for folks with bigger hands.  Aside from that the suggestions folks have offered up are about the only alternatives if you want to keep the P-01.  Good luck  :)

Heard back from Cajun and they said they couldn't cut down a hammer.
They suggested installing the factory hammer.

Seems a lost cause.
